Ubisoft: iPhone Not as Profitable as Other Formats

There’s something slightly confusing about French publisher Ubisoft’s attitude to iPhone gaming. The company has recently announced heavyweight franchises for the App Store, with Silent Hunter, Assassin’s Creed 2 Multiplayer, and Anno Dawn of Discovery all adding to Ubisoft’s iPhone output. But they also say it’s not as profitable of a platform.

Ubisoft is linked to one of the mobile market’s major players in the form of Gameloft, the two regularly coming together on casual, commercial releases. Yet, despite the relative success of Ubisoft’s iPhone ventures to date, the outfit isn’t entirely convinced Apple’s device is its kettle of fish.

According to Kotaku, Ubisoft only plans to release a ‘few’ new iPhone games in the near future, the publisher stating in a conference call that it will continue to split its mobile development between internal teams and teams at Gameloft. This is apparently due to a lack of faith in the format, Ubisoft adding that its titles don’t ‘seem to be as profitable there [on iPhone] as on the other platforms.’

Ouch. The lesson here, of course, is that if you want to see future Ubisoft releases on iPhone (the likes of Ghost Recon and Splinter Cell, perhaps) then you’d better get downloading its existing lineup, fast.
