It’s an age old response in this industry: when someone launches a new product that threatens your existing lineup, claim that, somehow, their new device will actually help boost the sales of your own.
Following Nintendo’s iPad response– where Nintendo president Satoru Iwata proclaimed iPad as nothing but a ‘bigger iPod touch,’ Sony has decided to offer comment regarding Apple’s newest showpiece.
According to PlayStation hardware boss John Koller, the iPad, apparently like the iPhone before it, will actually increase the sales of Sony’s flagging PSP.
‘Apple’s entrance into the portable gaming space has been a net positive for Sony,’ he told the Wall Street Journal. ‘When people want a deeper, richer console, they start playing on a PSP.”
For those of you thinking this kind of bizarre declaration sounds awfully familiar, you’d be right. Sony’s belief that the iPad will give the PSP a much-needed boost smacks of similar comments made by Microsoft when the Wii made its debut, the notion being that once consumers had enjoyed a taste for gaming, they’d want to move onto the “real thing,” namely Xbox 360. Of course, even the most cursory glance at sales figures proves just how off the mark Microsoft was in that regard.
