Rumor: Secret of Monkey Island 2 Coming to iPhone

This week at GDC, Lucasarts announced that Monkey Island 2: Special Edition will be coming to Xbox Live Arcade, PC, PS3, and iPhone and iPod Touch this summer. At the same time, Telltale Games, makers of the Tales of Monkey Island games, said they have no plans to bring their games to the iPhone, iPod Touch, or iPad quite yet.

Given the stellar performance of the original Secret of Monkey Island on the iPhone last summer, the suggestion that LucasArts is working on bringing its follow-up to the App Store later this year would hardly be a surprising one.

However, that’s exactly what Kotaku is reporting, claiming that LucasArts may even unveil Monkey Island 2: Special Edition at the Game Developers Conference in San Francisco this week.

The follow-up would likely follow the same path as the original’s fresh look, offering revised visuals and updated audio into the bargain, although all this is up in the air at the moment.

Said news clashes with rumors that broke on Pocket Gamer back in February, when the site stated that recent WiiWare and Windows hit Tales of Monkey Island– rather than 1991′s Monkey Island 2– was in line to hit the App Store in episodic form. Yet again, the site believed LucasArts would unveil its development at this year’s GDC.

Just who proves to be correct will have the bragging rights for a few hours, at least. It wouldn’t be out of the question to suggest that both titles could see a release on the iPhone this year. Monkey Island 2 is regarded by many to be the finest game in the series and was the direct follow-up to the original title, while Tales of Monkey Island is fairly fresh, having only made its debut back in July.

We’ll keep our eye on developments, and bring you all the latest from GDC as soon as we can.
