Rumor: Apple to Release a Controller

Our friends over at Pocket Gamer reported today that they have spoken to multiple developers who say Apple is planning to release an official game controller. The developers, who asked to remain anonymous, said they met with Apple representatives at GDC 2013 in a room reserved under a pseudonym.

The article doesn’t specify what devices the controller would work with, but if Apple is planning to open the Apple TV to third-party developers, it makes sense that they’d offer a controller to go along with it. Whether that controller would be compatible with iPhones, iPads, and iPod Touches, is another question.

None of the developers we spoke with at GDC mentioned talking with Apple about a controller, but one said that Apple did mention they were working on “something big,” but declined to elaborate.

  1. Making Apple TV into a multimedia console is a smart move and making a controller for it that works all devices would make Apple a lot of money. They already have the support of many indie and AAA developers (even if many of them are not making AAA titles for the iOS). It’s insane that they haven’t done this already.
