Rovio has dropped the veil on their most recent announcement, Angry Birds Epic. In a surprising twist, it’s not going to be a physics puzzler at all. Instead, according to Kotaku, it’s a turn-based RPG set in the Angry Birds universe, and it’s soft-launching in Australia and Canada this week.
There will be a campaign storyline, with an emphasis on crafting things like weapons, armor, and potions using currency either attained in-game or through in-app purchase. The final version of the game is expected to launch “later this year” on App Stores worldwide.
This isn’t the first time the avian flock has branched out from physics games. Rovio recently released the free-to-play downhill racer Angry Birds Go, which we enjoyed (at least until the freemium nonsense got in the way of the fun). Angry Birds Epic will also be free-to-play, so we’re hoping Rovio has learned a lesson or two from the feedback gamers and critics gave to Angry Birds Go.
