Rise of the Triad, by legendary first-person shooter developer Apogee Software, has just been confirmed for iPhone. The developers announced that a port of the original 1994 game will soon be available on the App Store.
The original was a highly-regarded follow-up to Duke Nukem and Wolfenstein 3D. It involved a special task force, H.U.N.T. (High-risk United Nations Task-force), sent to an island where demonic cult activity was taking place. Upon arriving, the team discovers that the cult plans to destroy Los Angeles, and must stop the plot.
Apart from being technically advanced for the time, Rise of the Triad was notable for having a set of different characters to choose from. The whole H.U.N.T. team was at your disposal, and they weren’t simply the same character with a different name. Each character had a different height, speed, and endurance.
Rise of the Triad was also noteworthy for its multiplayer modes, which allowed 11 players to play simultaneously. One of these was the unique “Prey” game type, in which one player without weapons had to escape the rest of the players. It also included regular Deathmatch and Capture the Flag.
Previous iPhone ports of FPS games from the early 90s like Doom Classic and Wolfenstein 3D Classic have been among our favorite games on the iPhone. We’ll be keeping our eye out for this one as it approaches the App Store.
