Report: Google Developing Android-Based Game Console

The Wall Street Journal reports that Google is currently developing an Android-based game console. The company is planning to design and market the device themselves, rather than outsource it to another electronics company. The console may release as early as this fall.

This device, assuming the rumor is true, won’t be the first Android-based game console to hit the market, as the OUYA landed on store shelves this week. Sales numbers for the OUYA haven’t been announced, so it remains to be seen how interested the gaming public will be in an Android-based console, especially with the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One releasing this year.

Many analysts think Apple is planning to open the Apple TV to developers which, along with their plans to support third-party controllers, would effectively turn that device into an game console as well.

The Wall Street Journal reports that Google is also working on an Android-powered wristwatch to compete with the rumored watch Apple is also working on. Read the full article for more details.

    • That doesn’t mean anything without numbers. They had problems with their manufacturer releasing the console on time so how many could they have actually made for retailers to sale at launch?
