Nintendo DS Game ‘999’ Released for iOS in Japan

Well this is bizarre. The Nintendo DS game 999: 9 Hours 9 Persons 9 Doors has been released on iOS in Japan, but with one key component removed–the gameplay. 999 is an extremely story-heavy experience, so if any game could have its puzzles removed and still be interesting, it’s 999. According to Kotaro Uchikoshi, the game’s writer and director, this visual novel version of the game will probably come to the U.S. this fall.

Instead of using puzzles to tie the game’s story together, the app uses a comic-style presentation, along with a chart to help you keep track of the many story branches and multiple endings. I’m looking forward to seeing how this turns out. I played the game on the DS and was frustrated by having to re-play through puzzles multiple times. This new approach would certainly solve that problem.
