New App A Day: Moonsters

Moonsters is about space tofu. You play as a horseshoe-shaped purple alien whose ship has crash landed on a planet full of winged yellow blobs of tofu that suspend themselves in the air like hummingbirds. Your job is to collect these tofus and trade them in for parts to fix your spaceship… Yeah, it’s pretty weird.

To collect the tofu, you slingshot yourself into the air. You can drag your alien left or right along the bottom of the screen to line up your best shot, then you determine the strength and trajectory of your shot and let loose.

You only get one shot to snag all of the tofu, so each one counts. If you collect the number of tofus required, you can move on to the next stage. If you’re a completionist, you can try again to collect them all. Soon moving platforms, bouncy mushrooms, and new characters are added, but the game never loses its strangeness.

While Moonsters is a colorful game with an oddball story that kids might enjoy, we still can’t quite recommend the game. Its gameplay mechanic has been done many times before, and the physics don’t feel quite right. But maybe its goofiness will be enough to satisfy you or your cartoon-loving kids.
