Today at 10am PST, Apple will pull back the curtain on one of their most highly-anticipated new devices, the iPhone 5. We’ve already got a pretty good idea of what to expect (listen to us discuss some of the device’s new features on our latest podcast), but we’ll be live at the event in San Francisco bringing you all the details, including which features will be best for gaming.
Update: Our Cover It Live filled up quickly, so here’s a transcript of the entire liveblog. Relive the excitement!
We’re in! The event is ten minutes away, journalists are heading to their seats.
We wish today was just a happy iPhone/iPod news day, but we are saddened by the news of US State Dept workers killed last night in Libya. As the sibling of a State Dept worker my heart goes out to the families.
Ok, let’s see what Apple has planned for us. Place your bets…
The consensus among analysts seems to be, Apple must innovate once again. Smartphone market is not what it was in 2007.
“silence your cellphones, we’re about to begin”. Music: Black Keys, Lonely Boy
We’ll bring you details as soon as we hear them, wi-fi willing, with a special focus on the big gaming news.
The way these things work, we’ll start with sales numbers first. Lights are dimming…
Here’s Tim Cook!
“we have a lot to show you”
First: Apple retail store update, showing off Barcelona store.

Here’s a demo of iOs 6 on iPhone 5. Here’s Scott Forestall
Live demo– new maps app
Maps uses vectors to be smother. Search engine for local points of interest
Info card gives Yelp reviews and photos. Also, free turn by turn directions.
3D views while driving. Looks snazzy.
While Scott takes us through maps, here’s a question. What do you want us to try out or test in the hands-on demos after this press conference?
Flyover is very cool looking, fun maps feature. Just at certain locations, though

That’s iOS 6. Phil is back onstage.
iPhone 5 comes in black and white.
Looks like we’ll find out price and availability soon. Wonder if we’ll see new ipods today also?
Here’s a video. Reminds me of the Stride gum parody from a month or so ago. http://www.fastcocreate.com/1681450/stride-gum-takes-a-page-from-apples-marketing-handbook-in-new-spoof-campaign
While the video plays, tell us your thoughts. Going to upgrade? what features sound best to you? Price you’d pay?

New iPhone is skinny and taller! Who wouldn’t like that

Comment From Jeremy
Oh good, Ping is still there. Really afraid Apple would kill it. I’m the king of PING.
Floating player means you can keep iTunes from filling the screen
Movies: iTunes will pick up where you were watching on iPad. Avengers scene: Hulk vs Loki
New iTunes seems streamlined, but not radically different.
Concerts button added: find out where artists are touring
Available in October
Now an update on iPod.
350 million ipods sold.
Changes to the lineup. First: Nano
New iPod nano is “reinvented”. Large display, easy controls, thin and light.
And, uses lightning connector. 7g Nano:

Pretty slick! Video is a great addition. Now: iPod Touch

150 mil players on gamecenter. New ipod touch: super skinny- 6mm thick
88 grams. Lightest Touch Apple has made
Big 4″ Retina display, same as iphone 5
Now this is the device gamers will want… Super portable. No word on processing power– A6 as well? Nope, A5.
Double the performance of the A4 (last ipod touch) but not as fast as iphone 5.
Game demo from NaturalMotion (Backbreaker Football). App is “clumsy ninja”
It’s a “toy”, interactive figurine. Pick up and interact with him
Ipod touch is calculating physics on the fly. Now tickling the ninja.
Clumsy Ninja learns how to get better at punching bag, trampoline, the more you play with him.
Big applause for Clumsy Ninja. coming this holiday season.

Here’s Tim onstage again.
One more thing? An ad.
Dancing colorful ipods
Ad: “how ya like me now?”
Tim Cook recapping all new products now
“incredible, industry leading innovation by themselves”
“Apple has never been stronger”
Seems like reports of Pandora’s demise have been greatly exaggerated.
Music event concert time.
Today, a performance by… Foo Fighters!
This is the part of the show where a live band rocks the house.
“Times like these”
Fun stuff. While Dave Grohl rocks out, any thoughts on today’s announcements?
These concerts always remind me of when rich people hire a famous band for their kid’s bar or bat mitzvah. A little showy. But hey , gotta love the Foo. This is better than last year’s guest, Coldplay. Jeff from 148apps isn’t bolting for the exits.
Should we shout out any requests? J/k
I recall last year, Foo Fighters was cited as one of the top selling iTunes artists of all time
Grohl is “inspired” by meeting his heroes in person. Now he’s playing There Goes My Hero
There’s a reason these press events are hard to get into… It’s breaking news and a live show all in one.
First row of journalists currently having their faces melted off by the Foo.
As Foo Fighters wrap up their set– did Apple innovate enough for you today? Is a bigger screen, faster chip, and smaller frame enough to keep up with Samsung and Google?
One more song! “Walk”
Let me take this moment to thank everyone who joined our liveblog and filled our cover it live to capacity.
Next: hands on demos, and our full impressions soon.
Foo Fighters totally rock. I highly recommend seeing them live three rows back for free.
Encore! That was fun. Now, demos.
That’s a wrap– we’ll have more iPhone 5 impressions for you soon. Thanks for tuning in!
