The market research firm Asymco has just reported that iOS is probably the most popular gaming platform of all time. While putting, say, the iPhone against the Xbox 360 isn’t exactly an apples-to-oranges comparison, it’s still a very interesting tidbit.
How did they come to this conclusion? By comparing several data points. First, they note that Apple announced at the Worldwide Developer Conference this year that 130 million Game Center accounts had been activated. Then they looked at OpenFeint, a social gaming platform that predates Game Center, which announced last year that they’d activated 180 million iOS accounts. Those numbers give a rough idea of how many people have used iOS as a gaming platform.
Then they charted those numbers against data about other gaming devices, both handheld and living room-sized, going back to the first really popular one, the Atari 2600.
