It looks like iOS gamers who don’t own the latest iOS hardware but are hoping to play Grand Theft Auto III: 10th Anniversary Edition just might be getting their wish. Gaming site Kotaku has confirmed with Rockstar Games that GTA III will be coming to “single-core iOS devices in the future.”
The statement is vague, but it’s good news for carjack-loving, open world-exploring iOS gamers who were disappointed that the original announcement said the game would be limited strictly to gamers with dual-core devices– namely, an iPhone 4S or iPad 2. However, they didn’t specify when the game will be available to people with older hardware.
Rockstar announced today that they’ll be bringing Grand Theft Auto III: 10th Anniversary Edition to iOS later this fall. We don’t know much about the game, like how it will be different from the 2001 original, or how much it will cost. Unfortunately, we do know that the game will only be playable on the very latest Apple devices: the iPhone 4S and the iPad 2. They didn’t release any screenshots or videos of the game in action, but they did give us the poster below.
When the game comes out, it will be the second GTA game to hit the App Store, after Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars. We thought Rockstar did an incredible job with Chinatown Wars– we even awarded it game of the year for 2010. Of course, that game was originally released for the Nintendo DS, so it was meant to be a handheld game from the start. Whether Grand Theft Auto III can make a smooth transition to iOS remains to be seen… provided you have the newest iPhone or iPad, that is.
