Gameloft Studio Accused of Overworking Employees

According to Games.On.Net, Gameloft, the maker of big-budget iOS games like N.O.V.A. 2, Modern Combat 2, 9mm, and Backstab, has come under fire from one of its former employees about “dangerous working conditions” at their Auckland, New Zealand office.

Glen Watson, the former head studio programmer for Gameloft’s Auckland office, tells of 120-hour working weeks and a culture of purposely shortened project deadlines. According to Watson, these practices constitute “fatiguing work” under New Zealand’s 2002 Health and Safety Employment Act, which gives employees the right to refuse such work. Games.On.Net states that they’ve seen e-mails between Watson and senior management at Gameloft that asserts that, “No one is held here against their will if they do not wish to work over their contractual hours.’

Other unnamed employees suggest that these practices by Gameloft’s Auckland studio are in place so they can turn in work ahead of schedule in order to avoid being shut down. Gameloft is based in Paris, France, with offices all over the world, and over 4,000 employees.
