Game of the Month, November 2013: Oceanhorn

Things are heating up as the year comes to a close. November was a fantastic month for iOS gamers, with a huge number of Must Have titles hitting the App Store. So whether you wanted to build a Death Star or run and jump as Mickey Mouse, the App Store had you covered. But there can be only one Game of the Month, and November’s is Oceanhorn by Cornfox & Bros.

Oceanhorn is a game that wears its inspiration on its sleeve. Its story and game design are obviously inspired by the Legend of Zelda series. You play as a young adventurer who sails around in a ship, clearing out dungeons and solving puzzles to progress. You even collect pieces of heart containers to expand your health allowance.

The graphics are drop-dead gorgeous, with touch controls that work remarkably well. We won’t be seeing an official Nintendo Zelda game on iOS anytime soon, so we’re glad Oceanhorn is here to keep us satisfied in the meantime.

Our runner-up for Game of the Month is Icycle: On Thin Ice by Damp Gnat. This game is like a 2D platformer on psychedelic drugs. You play as a naked man on a bicycle who can move forward and backward, jump, and open an umbrella to glide. But it’s the mind-bogglingly creative levels and artwork that are the real stars of the show. You never have any idea what waits for you on the next screen, but you know it will be nuts.

Congratulation to Cornfox & Bros and Damp Gnat for making our two favorite titles in another month of great games. Also be sure to check out the other big games we reviewed in November, including Papa Sangre II, Bit.Trip Run!, Star Wars: Tiny Death Star, Sorcery 2!, Rayman Fiesta Run, and Castle of Illusion Starring Mickey Mouse.

Easy win – great game. I’d put it in between Zelda and Zelda: Link to the Past in terms of difficulty, fun factory, and mechanics… with some extras sprinkled in. Great job guys!
