Game of the Month, June 2013: XCOM: Enemy Unknown

This year is shaping up to be incredible for iOS gamers, and we’re only halfway through it. Whether you wanted to cozy up with a fantasy gamebook or play a fantastic twist on the otherwise tired match-3 genre, June had you covered. Our favorite game of June was an iOS port of the massive strategy game XCOM: Enemy Unknown.

XCOM: Enemy Unknown completely nails what few other developers have even attempted: They’ve taken a full console game and reconstructed the controls to work great on the touchscreen. Even better, it’s a universal app, with iCloud save syncing.

In XCOM, you control a human war effort against aliens on two fronts. The first takes place in the command center, where you work with your advisors to develop new weapons, armor, and battle tactics. When that’s done, it’s off to battle, where you direct squads of soldiers against the alien enemies in turn-based battles. It all adds up to one of the deepest, most impressive games to hit iOS this year.

Our runner-up for Game of the Month is Kingdom Rush Frontiers, an impossible-to-put-down tower defense game that always keeps you on your feet. In it, you plant and upgrade towers, as well as direct fighters where you need them to be on the battlefield. Between rounds, you can upgrade your stats and powers, so you always feel your progression.

Congratulations to 2K Games and Ironhide Games for making two of our favorite iOS titles last month!
