Free Today: Zombie Highway, Japanese Werewolf, and More

There’s no such thing as a free lunch, and usually that’s true of free games as well. You’ll often end up paying one way or another– either by looking at ads, or by paying for more levels or in-game gold. But with so many games on the App Store, some developers give away their full games for free, just to get attention. This article focuses mainly on those free games that don’t ask for much in return.

Zombie Highway

Zombie Highway is still one of our all-time favorite zombie games on iOS. It perfectly recreates that classic scene from so many horror movies, where the heroes try to escape in a car, only to have the monsters cling to the side and try to knock it over. You have to swerve past abandoned cars and shoot out of the windows to get a high score. The download is free, but you can choose to pay to unlock better weapons right at the start, or play the game repeatedly to unlock them the old-fashioned way.

Our Score: 4 out of 4

Our Bottom Line: Zombie Highway won’t keep you entertained for long periods of time, but in short bursts this game oozes fun.

Mystery of the Japanese Werewolf

Mystery of the Japanese Werewolf is an unusual game, but the style is classic Metroidvania. You play as a girl who explores a massive spaceship, filled with unusual environments. With the instruction of an alien T-Rex, you have to run, jump, and fight your way through tons of enemies and bosses. Since Japanese Werewolf is a quality indie game, we recommend supporting the developer with your dollars, but the next best thing is to download this game and help it rise in the charts.

Our Score: 3 out of 4

Our Bottom Line: Dinosaurs, spaceships, and hero-girls: Three great tastes that were obviously meant to go together.

Pickpawcket

In this stealthy game, you play as a cat burglar (literally, a cat) who tries to steal the greatest works of cat-art. Dogs will patrol the halls of the museum, just waiting to bark at and bite you, so you have to remain in the shadows or use a variety of power-ups, like disguises or distractions. The game is free, but you’ll be able to pay for extra power-ups if you want.

Our Score: 3 out of 4

Our Bottom Line: Pickpawcket has immeasurable charm, but it’s a little lacking in challenge.

Monster Trucks Nitro 2

We let you know last time Monster Trucks Nitro 2 went free, but we’ll tell you again now in case you missed it. This week, it’s free to celebrate the launch of RedLynx’s newest racing game, MotoHeroz. Monster Trucks Nitro 2 is a fun arcade racing game with a 2D perspective. As you play, you just have to worry about the gas pedal, brakes, and keeping your vehicle upright. That ramp that sends you flying to the moon? Don’t worry about it a bit.

Our Score: 4 out of 4

Our Bottom Line: If you love explosions and jumping trucks (and who doesn’t?) Monster Trucks Nitro 2 should be the next game you download.

Wheeler’s Treasure

This clever platformer would be a typical pirate adventure, if it weren’t for the massive wheel that goes crashing through each level. You have to keep up with the wheel as it rolls past treasure, stomping on enemies and unlocking new gear. We called this game a roller coaster when it launched in late 2009, and today you can ride for free.

Our Score: 3 out of 4

Our Bottom Line: Enjoyable, exhilarating and not too long, Wheeler’s Treasure is a little roller coaster ride of a game.
