Free Today: Star Warfare, Telltale Episodes, and More

Here’s the best way to take advantage of the App Store’s zillions of games: Download our free GameFinder app, zip over to the Free Games list, and download these full-length games while they’re temporarily gratis. Or, just use today’s guide to nab a few featured free titles. Either way, you’re coming out ahead.

Star Warfare: Alien Invasion

We just reviewed this brand-new title last week, and it’s already marked down to free. This game features a Mega Man-like main character, and some nicely-rendered environments and bad guys, but you’ll have to survive a lot of enemy waves if you want to purchase extra ammo. Give it a download if you’re looking for some aliens to zap while you’re waiting in line at the store.

Our Score: 2 out of 4

Our Bottom Line: Star Warfare: Alien Invasion doesn’t offer anything we haven’t seen before in a dual-stick shooter.

Back to the Future: Episode 1

The “pilot” for Telltale’s Back to the Future episodic adventure series stars Christopher Lloyd as Dr. Brown and a Michael J Fox sound-alike as Marty McFly. In typical adventure game fashion, you’ll have to explore the environment, chat up the locals, and use inventory items to advance the game’s excellent story. If you love the movie trilogy, this iOS game series is worth playing as well.

Our Score: 3 out of 4

Our Bottom Line: Telltale’s storytelling abilities are second to none, but technical problems on the iPad once again rear their ugly head.

Law & Order Legacies

Like Back to the Future, the first episode of Telltale’s Law & Order game is also free for a limited time. You have to search crime scenes and interview witnesses, all while paying attention to the details that could help crack a case. The first episode features a “ripped from the headlines” plot about a high-powered official fleeing to the airport after a brutal attack on a hotel maid. It’s not our favorite adventure series, but this first epsiode is better than watching TV reruns.

Our Score: 2 out of 4

Our Bottom Line: Great for fans of Law & Order, but a minor distraction for anyone else.

iBlast Moki

You can buy the sequel, but this first installment in the physics-puzzler series is still a Must Have. You have to guide adorable creatures called Mokis to the level exit by blowing them up and using the environment to your advantage. You can place timed bombs, helium balloons, and more to make them go where you want. Even better: Once you’ve beaten the game, you can make your own levels and share them online.

Our Score: 4 out of 4

Our Bottom Line: If you enjoy getting stumped and stumping others, this personality-filled puzzle game should be your next download.

Zombie Scramble

Formerly known as Bunny the Zombie Slayer, this action game has you defending Easter from vicious zombies. You can throw eggs to take out the zombies, but you’re only shown half of the egg’s trajectory, so you’ll have to eyeball the rest. Like many Hothead games, this one has an extraordinary amount of polish and charm, so even though we’re months away from Easter, you should download this one today and play it year-round.

Our Score: 4 out of 4

Our Bottom Line: Bunny the Zombie Slayer will keep you entertained long after the eggs you forgot to pick up in the backyard have rotted.

Cows Vs Aliens

Hm, which creatures would you place a bet on? The ones that have mastered intergalactic space travel, or the ones that chew cud and get made into steaks? Despite their overwhelming technological advantage, the aliens can’t survive if you push them off cliffs and keep them away from the barn doors, which is what you have to do in this game. The physics and gameplay mechanics are very simple, but we had a lot of fun playing this game over and over again.

Our Score: 3 out of 4

Our Bottom Line: Cows Vs Aliens won’t give you hours of entertainment, but it offers a quick hit of fun whenever you have a moment to spare.

Mad Chef

In this brilliant genre mash-up from Foursaken Media, you play as a wily chef who starts off with just a few core recipes. As customers place their orders, you have to slice up the ingredients, Fruit Ninja-style, and build up your restaurant franchises over time. Though this is a free game, there are some optional in-app purchases if you want to skip ahead.

Our Score: 3 out of 4

Our Bottom Line: Mad Chef is a great game for fun, all-ages gameplay which is easy to pick up and play in short bursts, yet has a longer (rat?) tail behind that, lending itself to a longer-term experience as well.
