Free Today: Monster Burner, Rinth Island, and More

When developers face fierce competition, it’s the consumers who win big. With so many choices in the App Store, developers are forced to mark their full-sized games down to free, just to encourage more downloads. Take advantage of these limited-time deals, and snag these great games for free while you can.

Monster Burner

Ubisoft’s attempt at a casual action game couldn’t have been more successful– except now it’s available on the iPhone, and it’s free. In Monster Burner, you simply press down on the screen and flick to fire a magical blast at your enemies. The more monsters you torch in one flick, the higher your multiplier will be. However, spamming the field with fire will quickly deplete your magic abilities. Addictive gameplay and gorgeous, storybook graphics make Monster Burner well worth a download.

Our Score: 4 out of 4

Our Bottom Line: Monster Burner may seem simple, but its use of a large touch screen and Internet connection will make you appreciate the device you’re playing it on.

Jules Unboxing the World

In this innovative ball-rolling game, you have to tilt your iPad to guide a fox named Jules on a quest to rescue the entire world. Aliens have boxed up the human population, and you have to free them all while avoiding the aliens. The tilt controls aren’t the best we’ve seen, but the level designs in Jules Unboxing the World are quite clever, and this game is definitely worth a try while it’s still free.

Our Score: 3 out of 4

Our Bottom Line: For all its charm, Jules Unboxing the World fails to get the controls right, and it’s all downhill from there.

Lane Splitter

When you’re driving in your car and a motorcyclist cuts between the lanes, it might take you by surprise. But if you’ve played Lane Splitter, you’ll be able to see things from their point of view. In this high-score action game, you have to zip through traffic on a motorbike using tilt controls. You’ll then increase in speed until you inevitably hit a car, so don’t try this in real life.

Our Score: 3 out of 4

Our Bottom Line: Lane Splitter only tries for one small effect, but it achieves it beautifully.

Vermes on Mars

NASA may not have said anything officially on the subject, but it’s common knowledge that Mars is covered with giant, vicious sandworms. In Vermes on Mars, you get to control a squad of tanks as they clear out the critters with heavy weaponry. It’s a tough game, but Vermes on Mars is still a decent download if you don’t have to pay one red cent.

Our Score: 2 out of 4

Our Bottom Line: There is life on Mars, but you’ll have a hard time killing it.
