Free Today: Hard Lines, Mos Speedrun, and More

One of the most exciting things about the App Store is its unpredictable pricing. Due to the overwhelming amount of competing apps, major games often dip down to free for a limited time. Here are a few of the best full games you can download today, for free.

Hard Lines

Hard Lines takes the basic premise of Snake, the mobile-gaming classic, and modernizes it with fantastic neon graphics, multiple gameplay modes, and lots of charm. A recent update also added in-game currency and a new daily mission mode. We picked Hard Lines as one of the best games of 2011 so far and it’s a definite Must Have, so download it now while it’s free!

Our Score: 4/4

Our Bottom Line: You will believe…that lines have feelings, too.

Mos Speedrun

One of our favorite emerging genres on the App Store is the new breed of retro remixes– platformers with simple controls and a graphical style that hearkens back to the days of 4 and 8-bit visuals. These games also can have a punishing difficulty level, referred to as “masocore” (for hardcore, masochist gamers). Mos Speedrun is one of the best recent examples of this type of game, but it’s not nearly as intimidating or frustrating. Give it a try, since it’s free for a limited time.

Our Score: 4/4

Our Bottom Line: Mos Speedrun is a well-made platformer that encourages you to play the game in a way you probably wouldn’t otherwise.

Thumpies

Thumpies made our list of the Top 50 iPhone Games of 2010, and with good reason. This delightfully weird music game combines rhythm based gameplay with freaky bouncing monster heads. The music is outstanding, and it’s a lot of fun to try to collect every type of monster head in the game. Thumpies is one of our favorite music games on the App Store, and today it’s completely free.

Our Score: 4/4

Our Bottom Line: Thumpies is wacky fun that turns the rhythm genre on its creepy head.

Jaws

Jaws is a line-drawing game based on the 1975 movie that jump-started the career of a young Steven Spielberg. The game isn’t quite as fun as the movie, but it’s got its moments, like racing to pull tourists out of the water before Jaws turns them into chum. You can also check out the new sequel, Jaws Revenge, but it’s not available for free like the original game.

Our Score: 3/4

Our Bottom Line: Jaws on the iPhone is a refreshing twist on path-drawing, but it doesn’t last very long.

SushiChop

It’s no Fruit Ninja, but SushiChop is still a respectable slashing game. You play as the chef at a sushi restaurant, and as ingredients like tuna and squid fly in front of you, you have to slice them up and serve them to customers. While we wouldn’t recommend eating any free sushi, you should definitely grab SushiChop for free while you can.

Our Score: 2/4

Our Bottom Line: SushiChop gives you the task of preparing sushi with flying fish, but offers no progression and little to keep you coming back.
