Celebrating Slide To Play’s Third Anniversary

On September 1, 2008, Slide To Play launched with a handful of iPhone game reviews and a promise to our readers: We’ll never take money for a review, and you can always rely on our professionalism, honesty, and expertise. Three years later, we’re still going stronger than ever, and it’s all thanks to you.

Over the years, we’ve introduced new features to the site and its network to help you, the App Store shopper, make smart decisions and buy only the best games. There’s Padvance, our tech news site, which covers tablet, industry, and app news, including non-game app reviews. There’s also GameFinder, our iOS app, which lists the best daily deals, free offers, and our latest reviews in mobile form.

The Slide To Play podcast, which I host weekly along with Chris Reed and Jeremy Wood, recently passed the 100 episode mark, and we’ve got at least another hundred episodes in us as well. Our regular features, the Tuesday Twitter Giveaway, Big Game Night round-up, and indie games showcase Under The Radar have been there every week to connect you to the very best games iOS has to offer.

At the same time, we’ve developed a fantastic working relationship with the game developers that we cover. We’ve met developers from all over the world, and watched small companies like Halfbrick, Rovio, Zeptolab, and countless others grow into industry giants. And though we sometimes have to be brutally honest when it comes time to review their games, they always respect our independence and honesty, because it helps them make better games.

We were into Angry Birds before it was cool.

There are a lot of people to thank for helping Slide To Play reach the three-year mark. Steve Palley, our founder and CEO, brought together a fantastic team of programmers and writers to build the site from scratch. Thanks to Adam Buchen, Conor Egan, and Jeremy Wood for their behind-the-scenes technical work. Thanks to our editors Chris Reed, Tim Rattray, Grant Holzhauer, and our wonderful team of staff and freelance writers, who you can get to know here.

We want to thank the game company representatives who answer our pesky questions and provide access to their games so we can share our impressions with our readers. We also must thank our readers, whose passion for gaming keeps this job exciting and interesting every day. If you keep coming back to read what we have to say, we’ll keep writing.

To mark the third anniversary of STP, I want to share one last thing. It’s an article Conor wrote back in May 2009 called the iPhone Gamer’s Bill of Rights. This article perfectly encapsulates what we’re here for: to make sure that you, as a consumer, are having your voice heard by iOS game developers. Although some of Conor’s points have been resolved over time– many games now come with online high scores through OpenFeint or Game Center, for example– we still see the App Store economy as being a tough one for consumers to navigate. You want an expert on your side– and that’s us.
