Big Game Night: Star Marine, Smash Cops, and More

With CES underway, and Macworld just around the corner, things are heating up in the world of iOS gaming. Tonight we’ll see the launch of several interesting new games featuring space marines, zombies, cops, and kangaroos. These games will all be available on the US App Store tonight at 8pm Pacific, so read on for your first look.

Star Marine: Infinite Ammo

We’ve been waiting a long time for a worthwhile Contra clone on iOS. Lots of iOS games have stylish retro graphics, and a few have the classic 2d run-and-gun gameplay, but not many have combined them so effectively. GlitchSoft, the creators of Destructopus, have outdone themselves with this sci-fi shooter. Look for our review shortly after Star Marine hits the App Store tonight.

Smash Cops

If you like the downtown mayhem of games like Grand Theft Auto 3 or Reckless Getaway, you’ll get a big kick out of Smash Cops. The game lets you control a police officer in pursuit of dangerous suspects. To bring them to justice, you have to ram their car until it flips over. Smash Cops has unique touch-based controls that lets you control your squad car with one finger, and the camerawork is handled by a helicopter overhead.

Run Roo Run

The next iOS game from Scribblenauts developers 5th Cell is called Run Roo Run, and it launches tonight. In this puzzle game, you control a kangaroo in search of her joey. Each environment is only one screen length, but the developers pack in a lot of traps and obstacles across hundreds of levels. Scribblenauts was one of last year’s biggest App Store surprises, so we’re hoping Run Roo Run surprises us as well.

Urban Crime

Urban Crime is the latest in Gameloft’s freemium experiment. Their last freemium open-world game, Six Guns, was set in the old west, but Urban Crime takes place on the modern-day mean streets of Miami. We’re excited that players will be able to jack cars and shoot at gangs for free, but if Six Guns is any indication, you’ll probably also have to pay extra for essentials like ammo, health, and inventory space.

Zombie Wonderland 2: Outta Time!

In the first Zombie Wonderland, you played as a survivor named Chuck who was holed up in his house during the zombiepocalypse. In the sequel, you go back in time to wipe out zombies from Egypt, Japan, Norway, and medieval England. We liked the first game but thought it could be repetitive, so hopefully the time-travel gimmick works as well as it did in Age of Zombies.
