Big Game Night: Sonic Dash, Liberation Maiden, and More

It’s Wednesday again, and not only does that mean the week is half over, it also means big new games are heading toward the App Store. Tonight you’ll be able to steer a famous Sega mascot to success or doom, learn what a knitted deer is, and a lot more. Read on for details on what big games are coming out tonight. We have the early New Zealand links, which will take you to the live game in the US App Store after 8pm PST tonight.

Sonic Dash

We’re big fans of Sonic Jump, the last iOS game to feature the blue hedgehog, so we’re looking forward to playing Sonic Dash, a great-looking endless runner coming out tonight. In Sonic Dash, you run forward through 3D environments, swiping to avoid obstacles and collect coins. You can play as Sonic, Tales, Knuckles, or Amy, and collect power-ups like coin magnets and head starts. It sounds a lot like Temple Run, but as long as it’s well made, that’s fine by us.

Liberation Maiden

Liberation Maiden is a fast-paced shoot-‘em-up that originally came out for the 3DS. Made by Level-5, the company behind the Professor Layton games and Ni No Kuni, Liberation Maiden tells the absurd/awesome tale of a high school student who becomes president of New Japan after her father is assassinated. Instead of ordering the military to fend off a massive invading force, she takes to the skies in a flying mech to mount her own resistance. If that isn’t enough to pique your interest, we don’t know what is.

Knitted Deer

Another quirky game hitting the App Store tonight is Knitted Deer, from Forest Moon Games. Imagine if the knitted designs on a sweater came to life. That’s exactly what happens in Knitted Deer. You control a deer as it runs ever onward through a knitted environment, jumping over obstacles and shooting enemies. The game looks pretty simple, but it packs a chiptune soundtrack, special power-ups, and levels that take place in heaven and hell. Bizarre? Yes. Charming as all get-out? Absolutely.

Journey to Hell

If you’ve been fiending for an all-out action shooter, BulkyPix has you covered this week. In Journey to Hell, demons have made their way to Earth and are tearing up the place (and the populace). Luckily for us, an organization called Holy Shield has decided to shut the demons down for good. You play as a badass soldier who goes on a mission to save the planet, all while dropping demons by the dozen. Just listen to the heavy metal soundtrack in the trailer. If that doesn’t get you pumped up to slaughter demons, nothing will.

Metal Slug X

The Metal Slug games just keep on coming to iOS. Metal Slug X originally hit the arcades in 1999, and is actually a remake of Metal Slug 2. It sports much of the same shoot-‘em-up action, but with a higher difficulty level, smoother gameplay, and more weapons. The iOS ports of the first three games in the Metal Slug series were excellent across the board, so we expect this one to follow suit.
