Big Game Night: N.O.V.A. 3, LostWinds2, and More

Yesterday, we asked our readers which upcoming iOS games they’re looking forward to the most, and one of the most common responses was N.O.V.A. 3. Well, good news– the sci-fi FPS hits the US App Store tonight at 8pm PST, along with a few other big games. Read on for your links to the NZ store, so you can be the first to download these new games tonight.

N.O.V.A. 3 – Near Orbit Vanguard Alliance

The N.O.V.A. series has grown up into a lot more than just a Halo knockoff. The single-player campaign takes you from future San Francisco to a decaying Judger ship drifting near a sun as you try to recover ancient alien artifacts. N.O.V.A. 3 also offers a huge multiplayer mode, with 12 players online at once fighting in vehicles like mechs and jetpacks. Expect to find this shooter at the top of the charts soon.

Price: $6.99 US

LostWinds2: Winter of the Melodias

Winter of the Melodias is the sequel to LostWinds, a WiiWare game that we reviewed for iOS back in December. The series has some rich graphics and beautiful music, but in our original review, we were hampered by the awkward control scheme. Hopefully this sequel has the option for D-pad controls, which the original LostWinds game added in an update.

Punch Hero

Tonight, Gamevil is launching a freemium boxing game similar to Punch-Out!! called Punch Hero. As you fight, you’ll earn gold and experience, which will let you customize your boxer. However, since this is a free game, you’ll have to replay some fights multiple times to earn enough gold for the upgrades. Or, you can just charge your credit card. We’ll let you know soon if Punch Hero is another Gamevil sports champ, like Baseball Superstars 2012.

ChickenBreak

Ok, calling ChickenBreak a “big game” might be a bit of a stretch, but it is based on the animation studio Vithita’s original character, and we had some fun with it. You play as a chicken breaking out of prison. ChickenBreak’s gameplay feels like a combination of Jetpack Joyride and Fruit Ninja, with you tapping to avoid obstacles and swiping to destroy enemies. It’s a cute concept, but it also lacks some of the features we’ve come to expect from auto-running games.

Penny Time

Penny Time is a skateboarding game based on the Penny-brand plastic skateboards made in Australia. It plays a bit like Mirror’s Edge, with you swiping on the screen to jump over and slide under obstacles, but with a great 3D art style and cool music. If you can look past the fact that it’s an advergame, you’ll probably have some fun with Penny Time.
