Big Game Night: Kingdom Rush Frontiers, Sparkle 2, and More

Wednesday is Big Game Night, the night when developers usually release the most anticipated games on iOS, hoping that Apple will feature them on the App Store. Tonight at 11 p.m. EST, you’ll be able to defend kingdoms, construct bridges, solve color puzzles, and more. Read on for our picks of the biggest games launching tonight.

Kingdom Rush Frontiers

The original Kingdom Rush is still one of our favorite tower defense games on iOS. This sequel promises to deliver more of everything: more enemies, more levels, more towers, and more heroes. If we had to choose only one game to download tonight, Kingdom Rush Frontiers would be it.

Sparkle 2

It’s been while since we’ve seen a great marble-shooting match–3 game on the App Store, but Sparkle 2 wants to fill that void. From the company that brought us the bizarre and excellent Grim Joggers and King Oddball, Sparkle 2 promises to deliver a full-fledged puzzle game, with 90 levels, three modes, and a handful of enchantments and power-ups. If this game can’t reinvigorate the genre, probably nothing can.

Bridgy Jones

This is a physics puzzler about building bridges to help Bridgy Jones and his dog navigate difficult terrain. It looks kind of like World of Goo but with a focus on horizontal space, and various types of building materials thrown in to spice things up. The production values look great, and the gameplay is tried and true.

Runaway: A Road Adventure

Runaway is a port of a point-and-click adventure that originally hit PCs back in 2001. It tells the story of a science student who’s about to head across the country for college when he gets involved in an adventure involving a stolen crucifix. The animation looks great (just watch the PC trailer above), but the success of the game largely depends on how well BulkyPix has ported over the controls. We’ll find out tonight.

9th Dawn

9th Dawn is a semi-retro style RPG inspired in equal measure by old-school Ultima and modern open-world games. At the start of the game, you choose to play as either a knight, archer, or mage. Once you do that, you’re on your own to talk to villagers, pick up quests, and explore the island of Montelorne at your leisure. The game has been doing well on Android (trailer above), and developer Made with Marmalade has high hopes for it on iOS.

Color Zen

Color Zen is billed as a relaxing puzzle game, so the best way to enjoy it is to find a comfy chair, pop some earbuds in your ears, lean back, and begin. Watch the video to get an idea of what the gameplay is like– the color-based puzzles are unlike anything we’ve played before. But between the beautiful visuals and atmospheric soundtrack, this game certainly caught our eye.
