Big Game Night: Frozen Synapse, Gravity Guy 2, and More

Wednesday night is Big Game Night, the night when iOS developers release their games in hopes that Apple grants them a “Featured” spot on the App Store. Tonight, at 11 p.m. EST, you’ll be able to play a beloved PC strategy game, a few cool-looking sequels, and more. Read on for our picks of the biggest games launching tonight.

Frozen Synapse

The strategy game Frozen Synapse originally appeared on the PC in 2011 to much acclaim. It’s about to hit the iPad. In it, you control a group of rebels fighting against a corporate government regime. You and your opponent can take your time to plan and prep your moves. When both are ready, your moves play out simultaneously. The game has 55 missions in its campaign mode, plus five multiplayer modes, including cross-platform multiplayer. All that for $6.99? Pretty sweet.

Fire & Forget The Final Assault

If there’s one thing that adds extra excitement to racing games, it’s shooting. Fire & Forget The Final Assault, a post-apocalyptic game of racing and combat, shows lots of promise. You control an armored vehicle capable of driving fast, shooting, and even flying. You plow forward automatically, and the idea is to avoid obstacles and shoot down your opponents. Sounds good to me.

Gravity Guy 2

The original Gravity Guy was a fun, tough platformer based on running fast and inverting gravity at will to avoid obstacles. This sequel looks to offer more of the same, with seven different characters to choose from, coins to collect, level-ups to achieve, and power-ups to buy.

Can Knockdown 3

The previous Can Knockdowns were fun games with graphics that were way better than necessary for the subject matter. The third installment continues this trend, with realistic art and a great physics engine more than capable of delivering can-knocking gameplay. They’ve also included physics puzzles and challenges this time around, making Can Knockdown 3 one to keep an eye on.

Manuganu

Manuganu is a side-scrolling running game with slick-looking 3D polygonal graphics and lots of different environments. The set-up may be similar to the hundreds of other auto-runners, but the gameplay looks deeper than most, and the graphics are certainly eye-catching. Watch the trailer to see what I mean.

Jacob Jones and the Bigfoot Mystery: Episode 1

Jacob Jones and the Bigfoot Mystery: Episode 1 is an interesting-looking adventure game. You control the titular hero on an adventure at Camp Eagle Feather to find out what’s lurking in the forest at night (call me crazy, but I think it might be a bigfoot). Typical for the genre, the game has you solve puzzles and talk to fully voiced quirky characters, like your death-metal-loving roommate.
