Big Game Night: Bug Princess 2, Saturday Morning RPG, and More

If you’re looking for a sneak peek at the new iOS games hitting the App Store tonight, you’ve come to the right place. We’ve picked what we think are the biggest launches tonight, including a sequel to Cave’s bullet hell shooter Bug Princess and a freemium RPG based on 80s Saturday morning cartoons. These games will all be live on the US App Store at 8pm Pacific tonight.

Bug Princess 2

Cave is known for their frantic shoot ‘em ups, where the goal is to find the one bit of space on the screen where you won’t get shot to pieces. Bug Princess 2 is a port of the arcade version, with alternate gameplay modes that throw even more bullets at you. We’ve enjoyed all of Cave’s iOS shooters so far, and tonight’s launch looks like another well-polished effort.

Saturday Morning RPG

If you grew up in the 1980s, you probably spent your Saturday mornings watching GI Joe or Transformers. Saturday Morning RPG is an episodic RPG that is filled with nostalgic references, from the Trapper Keeper binder and Michael Jackson one-glove special attack to the 8-bit Cobra Commando and Lizard Men enemies. Even better, you can download the first episode for free.

Ice Age Village

We played this casual city-building sim briefly at GDC. While Ice Age Village looks nice and is packed with characters from the films, we have trouble getting excited about yet another Smurfs’ Village or Dream Zoo clone. It’s a free download, so as long as you don’t let your kids make in-app puchases, this might be worth putting on your iPhone or iPad as an entertaining diversion.

Virtual City 2: Paradise Resort

The last time we checked in on the Virtual City series, we called the first game a highly detailed, goal-oriented city-building sim. In the sequel, you’ll build sprawling hotels in exotic locations, along with special buildings like casinos and ski resorts. Virtual City 2 is a free download as well, but we think it’ll be more challenging for older gamers than Ice Age Village.

CreaVures

At this year’s IMGAs, one of the games we considered in the Best Casual Game category was CreaVures. In this beautifully-designed game, you play as a mystical woodland creature trying to restore light to the forest. The platforming feels fun and natural, and you’ll be able to switch between characters with different abilities.
