Big Game Night: AVP Evolution, Real Racing 3 (US), and More

It’s Wednesday night, which, like Friday for films or Tuesday for console games, is the day when all the best new iOS games launch at once. Tonight you’ll have a chance to tear off some heads as an alien killing machine, or swap gravity using a magic duck. This sort of variety is exactly why we love finding new games in the App Store. Read on for your early New Zealand links, which will take you to the live game in the US App Store after 8pm PST tonight.

AVP Evolution

avp1

Two of cinema’s freakiest monsters clash on your iOS device in AVP Evolution, from Angry Mob Games, the developers of the far cheerier Muffin Knight. AVP Evolution is dark and violent, with Predators that will rip off your head for a trophy, or aliens that will bite it off for a snack. AVP Evolution takes you through the life cycle of an alien, including face-huggers and chest-bursters, but we found some of the combat to be a bit reductive. This is a high-priced game, so it might be worth waiting to see our full review before buying.

Cognition Episode 1

cognitionep1

In the adventure series Cognition, you play as psychic detective Erica Reed. With its intriguing cel-shaded art style, Cognition looks like an animated comic book and plays like a classic point-and-click adventure. Cognition is also available on PC, in case you don’t like trying to find clues on a touchscreen. If you’re a fan of elegant thrillers like Yesterday, Broken Sword, or The Walking Dead, Cognition is a substantial adventure.

Penumbear

penumbear1

Penumbear is a new game from Bulkypix and Taco Graveyard, developers of an odd little running game called Four Hats. In science, the penumbra is the part of an object that is partly obscured by shadow, so penumbear is a bear who lives partly in the shadows. As you might expect, the colorful lighting in this game is excellent, and it serves as the basis for most of the game’s puzzles. You’ll have to use your bear to switch off certain lights to make it to the exit. Penumbear is a quiet, moody game, with some interesting ideas worth exploring.

Gravity.Duck

Tonight, Gravity.Duck joins the ranks of great, famous ducks like Duckman, the Aflac spokesduck, and Howard the Duck. Gravity.Duck is a new game from Ravenous Games, the studio best known for their pixel art and touchscreen platformers like League of Evil. Though we haven’t enjoyed every one of their new games, we think Gravity.Duck looks charming and quirky enough to stand out from other simple iOS platformers. You can also give this game a try online for free.

Real Racing 3

rr3screen2

EA’s huge new racing game finally launches in the US tonight, after two weeks of a “soft launch” in New Zealand and Australia. Real Racing 3 is a free download, but you’ll have to wait for your cars to be repaired in the shop if you don’t grease some mechanic’s palms with in-game currency. Also, while RR3 imports your friends’ racing times as part of its “time-shifted multiplayer,” you won’t actually be able to race against anyone live and online. There are both good and bad points in RR3, many of which we covered in our recent podcast, but as a free download, it’s definitely worth a try.
