Apple Working on Physical Controller for iOS Devices

Many longtime console gamers wish that the iPhone, iPad, and iPod Touch had a physical controller peripheral. While touchscreens are great for their directness and simplicity, there are many games where the precision of a proper controller would be ideal. If you’re a gamer that wishes for a proper controller for your iOS device then you’d be interested to know that Apple is working on such an accessory.

NOT a prototype of Apple’s iOS controller.

Here’s a telling excerpt from AnandTech’s iPad 2012 review:

I know of an internal Apple project to bring a physical controller to market, but whether or not it will ever see the light of day remains to be seen. As smartphones and tablets come close to equalling the performance of current game consoles, I feel like the controller problem must be addressed.

One of my sources at a major research firm said that he knew about the controller from his contacts at Apple but cautioned, “Right now, I’d give this thing less than a 50/50 chance of being released, but that could change in the future.” While that quote was (intentionally) vague (in that oh-so-special analyst way), it does add another source that confirms Apple is indeed working on a physical controller for iOS devices. Whether it hits the market — and to be clear there is a ton of Apple hardware that’s prototyped but never released — is another question.

The more important question is this: are you interested in a physical-controller accessory for your iPhone, iPad, or iPod Touch?
