App Store Approval Slowdown Hits Developers

VentureBeat has a story up about the travails of the App Store approval process, which has hit a rough patch coinciding with the holidays.

Apparently average approval times for both new apps and updates have shot from 2-4 days to a week or more in many cases, frustrating developers’ plans for timed launches and press coverage.

The story speculates that the delays are due to Apple’s employees taking time off for the holidays, which is probably a big factor, along with the ever-increasing volume of approval requests. We’ve heard from several sources that the App Store approval team is surprisingly small, considering the kind of work it is expected to do; does Apple have any plans to staff up and eliminate the bottleneck?
