After a successful crowd funding campaign, Galcon 2 is ready for release. While the developer calls it a demolition derby in space, it feels way more than just crashing into other players. To me it’s a very well done multiplayer space strategy game.
The biggest additions to Galcon 2 include the support for multiplayer clans, betting on matches, and larger galaxy sizes — at least on the iPad. Galcon has been one of my favorite games for years, I’m glad to see a refresh and update like this.
Who even knows what goes on in the minds of Simogo. Today the inimitable developer of games like Device 6, The Sailor’s Dream, and Year Walk took to Twitter to tease something called The Sensational December Machine. What is it? Your guess is as good as mine. But you can find the picture that accompanied the tweet below.
Could it be a game? A novella-like thing with beautiful art? The company’s last title came out at the beginning of November, so it’s not like they’ve had a ton of time to create a new riddle wrapped in a mystery inside an enigma.
The only other blip of information included was the text of the tweet, which announced, “Coming (very) soon.” Several hours later, Simogo retweeted the tweet, saying, “In case you missed it today… Stay tuned.”
Gameloft has released a new game in the Brothers in Arms series. Sons of War is a free to play FPS that focuses on quick cover and response actions. The free to play aspect may turn some people off, but we’ve seen in the past that Gameloft is pretty good to respond to concerns, so if you see a problem, let them know.

80 Days is a great game/narrative experience. In fact, it won Time Magazine’s game of the year, beating out every other game on ever other platform in 2014, if you can believe that. If you like the game as much as we and Time Magazine did, you’re in luck. It has just received a content update that adds some arctic freeze to the fun.
If you’re not familiar with 80 Days, it’s billed as “a massive steampunk reimagining of Jules Verne’s Around the World in 80 Days.” It’s like a choose-your-own adventure story that times you as you chart a course, well, around the world. Most of the game takes place in pictures and text, as you plot out which cities to visit, talk to people, and try to book travel using various modes of transportation.
Each playthrough is different if you make different choices. The script, according to the developer, has over 500,000 words, which amounts to about five novels glued together. It’s a trip, man. The new content is a polar expedition (about 30,000 additional words) that comes to all customers of the game for free. You can buy the game here for $4.99.
And if you’re an Android device owner, you can now buy the game on Google Play and the Amazon Appstore now too.
I first saw this game a few months ago. The premise in unique and very fun. The game starts with the death of the final boss as the player then works back through the full game. See a dead bad guy, make sure to jump on top of them to bring them back to life. See an outline of a collected coin, make sure to grab it. It’s odd, it’s awesome.
For a while now, Gameloft has been trickling out the goods on their upcoming World War II shooter Brothers in Arms 3: Sons of War, but they’ve finally spilled the majority of the beans. For starters, the game will be available this week, on Wednesday, December 17. That’s coming right up.
The press release is a little strangely worded, which makes me think it’ll be unusual for a Gameloft shooter. First off, it’s a cover shooter, so you’ll be able to use the D-pad to snap into position behind barriers to do your fighting. The single-player campaign will consist of eight chapters, with a variety of mission types.
Your team is comprised of 12 soldiers, each with a unique ability and stats that can be leveled up as you progress. You can choose which soldiers you bring along with you on the missions. The game will have a bunch of weapons, of course, and it will let you take on additional missions if you choose.
There’s no mention of price, which means it could be either free-to-play or premium. There’s also no mention of multiplayer, so I wouldn’t count on being able to hop online to frag n00bs at launch. I’m not quite sure what to expect on Wednesday, but if it’s any consolation, we won’t have long to wait.
Lucky Frame, the developer behind games like Bad Hotel, Wave Trip, and Nightmare Cooperative, has announced it will no longer make games. Its members will scatter to the wind and work on other projects, and they’re leaving game development behind.
In a blog post, Lucky Frame’s Yann Seznec wrote, “For three years we outsold the average game releases on the market, which was enough to sustain us and allow us to make the games we wanted to make. Some of those games sold well (Bad Hotel is owned by around 100,000 people) some of them sold very little (Nightmare Cooperative has sold around 7,000 copies across all platforms).”
Seznec cites money as a factor in the decision to move on, but not the primary one. “It had become increasingly clear to me personally that I did not have the burning desire to sell games.” What is to become of Lucky Frame? On possibility is that it will continue to host regular game events and workshops for other developers.
Lucky Frame’s games will remain on the App Store.
The post continues, “What is important is that with very few exceptions, for three years we were uncompromising about the games we wanted to make, we made them as well as we possibly could, and we marketed them to the best of our ability. While we didn’t make very much money, I think anyone who has worked in any creative field will agree that making enough to cover your costs and continue creating is a massive success. We certainly felt that way.”
It’s sad to see them go. Lucky Frame had a distinctive vision and made games that were all their own. We need more developers like them.
Good news fans of great games, Papers, Please will be available for iPad tomorrow, December 12. As tweeted by the creator earlier today, the game will be out for all models of the iPad (not enough screen real estate on the iPhone) and only required minor modifications to be approved by Apple.
After the two month conversion process, the only issue with submitting the app was the partial nudity seen in the game in the x-ray machine. The desktop version has an option to “lightly clothe” the x-ray images, that option is just permanently on in the iPad version.

Update: Nevermind, Helsing’s Fire is broken on iOS 8… After writing this I decided to download it and play through it again, but no, it’s busted. You might also want to look into Lucas’ previous iOS game, from way back in 2010, Helsing’s Fire [iPhone, iPad iTunes] — it’s one of my all-time favorites and a very well done puzzle game for iOS.

As with most free-to-play games, if you want to spend money in the game, the sky’s the limit. The priciest IAP costs a smooth $100, so maybe turn off the feature when you hand the game to your kids.
As an aside, the company behind this game, Kabam, is also working on a Marvel RPG that’s set to release in fall 2015.

Easily the best MFI controller for iOS devices, the SteelSeries Stratus XL doesn’t disappoint.
There’s a variety of MFI Certified controllers out there for iOS. Most of them are passable, but this one shines. In what I believe is the ramp up to games on Apple TV, Apple last year released official APIs to allow game developers to support controllers. We’ll skip the details about what Apple did wrong, but that official support has meant is a slow trickle of controllers being released.
The Stratus XL is the bigger brother to the very portable, but very cramped Stratus controller. The XL is a full sized, console quality controller for iOS. The buttons feel great, the weight is good and balanced. Very well done. While I prefer the dual stick layout of the Xbox line (one high, one low), the Stratus XL uses the two low layout of the Playstation line. Easy to adapt either way.
In general, the buttons all feel great. Including the shoulder buttons which have been an issue with other controllers. But as with any controller, there has to be something wrong with it, right? The only very slight problem I found were that the dual sticks were a bit stiff. Not to the point that it was detrimental, but it was noticeable. It’s a balance, like everything. Would have been easy to make them too loose too.
If you are looking for a MFI controller, the SteelSeries Stratus XL is the best one out there right now. It’s available starting today from Apple.com and at Apple Stores for $69.95.
While we wait for more games to finally add MFI support, we at least now have a killer full size controller to use when that happens.
