Today’s featured app is Seed 2 – Vortex of War, an action RPG that plays a lot like Zenonia and Seed 1 – Rise of Darkness. Once again, the continent is under attack from nasty villains, and it’s up to the androgynous hero Litta and his Obi-Wan-like mentor Kanto to put them back in their place.
To do that, you complete missions and side quests that have you scurrying all around the world, killing everything that has even a hint of villainy about it. Since the story in Seed 2 is self contained, knowledge of the first game isn’t necessary to play it, but the numerous references to incidents and characters from the original will go over your head. The first game is a freemium title, so you won’t be short any money if you want to check it out before paying for this one.
The fighting is the stand-out feature of Seed 2, in that it looks awesome in all its blazingly fast, 16-bit glory. You start the game with an inventory containing a gun, a sword, and a staff, each of which has its own pros and cons. One thing they all have in common, though, is how smooth their combos are. Tapping the attack button repeatedly lets you wale away at all enemies within reach of your weapon, no matter which way you’re facing. You can use dash attacks and charged attacks as well, but those drain your SP meter. Enemies abound, and they respawn after a while, so you never have to go long without finding something to kill.
Quests, particularly the side quests assigned by the yokels around town, are very basic and repetitive. In the first village, you’ll be asked to pick five mandara mushrooms from the forest, collect five anapa shrimp from the sea, kill 10 hornets, and deliver a letter. The quest log does a good job of keeping track of what you need to do, so you don’t have to worry about forgetting anything.
We’re enjoying Seed 2 so far, but it doesn’t seem to offer anything we haven’t seen many times before. However, if you’re looking for a decent action RPG to sink your teeth into, Seed 2 will do the trick.
