Mega Man (‘Rockman’ in Japan) has had a rough time of things over the past year thanks to major game cancellations and general mistreatment at the hands of Capcom Japan. Fans have wondered (somewhat vocally) if the Blue Bomber has pilfered from his last Robot Master, but it seems that’s not the case. The Mega Man franchise is back (in iOS form) with ‘Rockman Xover,’ a social RPG coming to Japan later this Fall.
Rockman Xover is actually pronounced ‘Rockman Cross-Over,’ which gives you a hint about the game’s premise. Indeed, all the Rockman timelines and universes collide in Rockman Xover, forming one heck of a confusing scenario. Basically, the villains across several generations of Rockman games team up and lock away all the different incarnations of Rockman in a separate dimension. The heroes of the Rockman universe, including Dr Light and Dr Cossack, team up and create the robot that the player uses on the rescue mission.
We’re assuming Dr Cossack made the decision to add that fur collar on the player robot’s uniform. Mother Russia is beautiful, but she is cold.
Your robot avatar is able to make use of the ‘Battle Memory’ that’s scattered around the world. The destructive power granted to you via the Battle Memory will come in handy against the evil robots that are not actually evil, but simply programmed that way.
There’s not a lot of information on how Rockman Xover will play, nor do we know if the game is destined for an English language release.
Rockman/Mega Man turns 25 this year, and if this is the only milestone Capcom has planned for him, well, is a bit of a subdued celebration. Granted, it’s nice to see a new Rockman game blink into existence after nothing but cancellations, but given the lackluster iOS ports of classic games like Mega Man 2 and Mega Man X, it’s hard not to be wary. Get equipped with skepticism.
