MapleStory Comes to Mobile as MapleStory Live

Sit back. Relax. We’re going to tell you a story. A MapleStory. A mobile version of Nexon’s hugely popular side-scrolling massively multiplayer online game (MMOG) is finally available for iOS and Android as MapleStory Live.

MapleStory is a long-lived franchise. The original PC incarnation of the game has existed since 2003 in South Korea, and 2005 in North America. MapleStory Live plays much like its ancestor: you travel through a huge two-dimensional side-scrolling world and beat up cutesy anime creatures. You complete quests, level up, make friends, slay enemies–the works.

However, if you’re looking to play MapleStory Live for free, you’re going to have to deal with a ‘lite’ version of the adventure. Only one character is available at the start of the free game, namely Fenris from the Dual Blade class. If you pay up, you can unlock the Mechanic class, too.

The free-to-play version of MapleStory Live also restricts access to the mailbox, minigames, and the storage facility. Finally, MapleStory Live is kind of a lonely journey to begin with, as there’s no live multiplayer. Really, though Nexon advertises the game as ‘the complete mobile version of MapleStory,’ it’s more of a sprawling 2D solo adventure than an MMOG.

Which, when you think about it, certainly isn’t a bad thing to have on iOS and Android. If you want to download MapleStory Live for yourself, visit the game’s page on iTunes.

Two offshoot MapleStory games are already available for mobile platforms: MapleStory Thief Edition and MapleStory Cygnus Knights Edition.
