LBX Games: iPad A Challenge To Handhelds and Consoles

Though the welcome from publishers and developers alike for Apple’s iPad has been almost universally positive, some studios are willing to go a little further with their praise than others. According to German developer LBX Games, the outfit behind MTV’s recent SpongeBob JellyFish Jam title, iPad represents Apple’s greatest threat to the handheld status quo so far.

“Thanks to the iPhone/iPod feature set, the big screen and the fast processor, it’s a real challenger for PSP and DS,” company CEO Fabian Thiele told GamesIndustry.biz.

“It combines the best features of these two devices [iPhone and iPod touch] and excels them in nearly all functions. Sure, some hidden buttons and a directional pad would be brilliant, but for all the games the iPhone is famous for, the iPad will shine. And I’m pretty sure, that there will be a lot of iPad specific games and applications.”

But, according to Thiele, rather than simply challenging Nintendo for its handheld crown, iPad could steal market share from the HD consoles as well, taking the App Store out of its mobile confines and turning it into a major multi-platform player.

“The iPad could be the link between mobile gaming and normal computer games,’ he continued. ‘So both ends, the mobile developers and the ‘normal’ computer developers, can use the platform as an extension to their product strategy.’

LBX itself plans to port Spongebob Jellyfish Jam to iPad with upgraded assets, controls and new feature, though Thiele said in the future the studio plans to develop iPhone and iPad releases simultaneously.
