It’s been a few months now since I was lucky enough to take over the controls here at Slide To Play and we’ve been pretty quiet about what changes we were going to make. Well now we can finally reveal some bits as we will be launching the new Slide to Play very shortly and it takes Slide To Play in a pretty new and exciting direction. Let me explain.
Why a new site?
It’s a long story, but I’ll make it as short as I can.
Sites like Slide to Play exist purely because we love mobile games. We love finding new games and we love sharing the stuff we like with you. But we have to keep the lights on and the bits flowing. That means we have to pay bills, sometimes some rather large bills. To do that we run ads on the site — as few as we possibly can get away with. But those ads are a necessity to allow us to do what we love, bring the game news to you.
Then about two years ago the bottom dropped out for advertising. Free to play took over and with it came the era of buying users from game to game instead of building a brand by buying ads on sites like Slide To Play. That meant that sites like Slide to Play saw up to an 80% drop in ad revenue and we had less to pay writers. Fewer writers meant fewer stories which meant fewer page views for the few ads we had left. And that meant even less money coming in to keep the lights on.
So, damn. No money from ads = fewer writers = fewer posts = fewer page views = even less money = time to try something new.
That New Car Smell!
That’s where the site was when I took over. The drop in revenue wasn’t the fault of the previous staff as they did an amazing job in what became a pretty harsh environment, almost overnight.
I took over with every intention of pumping up Slide To Play to its old glory, and hopefully beyond. I tried a few experiments on a different server to see what might work. Then I threw those away and tried more. Finally I think I have something that might actually work.
I’ve been describing it as a sort of Techmeme meets The Wirecutter for mobile games. Aggregating what mobile games sites like Touch Arcade, Gamezebo, and 148Apps publish, stripping out any fluff, and making a concise resource to what is happening in mobile games right now. We won’t be syndicating what they are producing, just curating and cross-referencing it to produce what we hope will be the go to resource for gaming on mobile.
In addition we will still be producing our own original content. But this change allows us to do this at a higher level. Perhaps we can discuss more the changes going on in the industry and what we can look forward to. We’ll also be producing more best of guides / top games lists and such.
There you go, the cat is out of the bag. We hope you will like the brand new Slide to Play. It’s more than just a fresh coat of paint, it’s a whole new beginning.
Look for the new site coming soon and let us know your thoughts. If you like it, I hope that the 47% of the readers that are blocking the ads on Slide To Play consider adding us to their exemption list. It will help greatly.
