If your cellphone service provider is Verison, then chances are good that you own an iPhone. According to data recently released by the carrier, 6.2 million of the 9.8 million smartphones Verizon moved in the fourth quarter of 2012 were iPhones. That’s good news, though Verizon still posted a loss for the quarter.
According to Fran Shammo, Verizon’s Chief Financial Officer, approximately half the iPhones that Verizon sold were iPhone 5’s, which demonstrates that the 4 and 4S still command a large chunk of the market. Overall, iPhones made up 63% of Verizon’s smartphone activations, up from the 47% average over the past five quarters.
In fact, with $30 billion in revenue ($20 billion of which was wireless revenue) in Q4 2012, Verizon did well for itself with 115.85 billion in revenue reported for the entirety of 2012. That’s up 4.5 percent year-over-year, but Verizon still posted a loss due to pretax charges of 7.2 billion and expenditures related to Hurricane Sandy.
