After the rush of amazing games at the end of 2010, 2011 got off to a bit of a weak start. We’ve given out fewer 4s and more 1s than we have in a while, but one major iOS game shot out above the rest. Besides being a joy to play, Dead Space injected a new emotion into our handheld gaming time: fear.
Dead Space is one scary game. The production values are top-notch, with every clank on the catwalk causing an echo and every shadow hiding an alien lurker. It’s also got some novel new iOS controls, with an invisible D-pad for moving your character, and a minimal heads-up display to give you maximum viewing space.
The story also fits right in before the events of the recently-released Dead Space 2 on consoles. You play as Vandal, a character who wears the same metal spacesuit as Isaac Clarke. While we don’t want to spoil the ending, we can say that the game offers some clever twists, as well as a handful of freaky hallucinations.
Our runner-up for Game of the Month is Bug Heroes, a twin-stick shooter from the makers of N.Y. Zombies. Bug Heroes lets you play as either an ant, spider, or beetle as you defend your stash of food.
What makes Bug Heroes special is not just that you have three different characters to use, but you can also explore the levels for food, defend your stash with turrets, and take side missions for extra cash and experience points. Bug Heroes is a fantastic shooter, and we can’t wait to see what’s next from Foursaken Media.
Congratulations to EA Mobile and Foursaken Media for making this month’s two best iPhone games!
