    iPhone 5 Press Event Liveblog

Today at 10am PST, Apple will pull back the curtain on one of their most highly-anticipated new devices, the iPhone 5. We’ve already got a pretty good idea of what to expect (listen to us discuss some of the device’s new features on our latest podcast), but we’ll be live at the event in San Francisco bringing you all the details, including which features will be best for gaming.

Update: Our Cover It Live filled up quickly, so here’s a transcript of the entire liveblog. Relive the excitement!

    9:49

We’re in! The event is ten minutes away, journalists are heading to their seats.

    9:50

We wish today was just a happy iPhone/iPod news day, but we are saddened by the news of US State Dept workers killed last night in Libya. As the sibling of a State Dept worker my heart goes out to the families.

    9:51

Ok, let’s see what Apple has planned for us. Place your bets…

    9:55

The consensus among analysts seems to be, Apple must innovate once again. Smartphone market is not what it was in 2007.

    9:57

“silence your cellphones, we’re about to begin”. Music: Black Keys, Lonely Boy

    9:59

We’ll bring you details as soon as we hear them, wi-fi willing, with a special focus on the big gaming news.

    10:00

The way these things work, we’ll start with sales numbers first. Lights are dimming…

    10:00

    Here’s Tim Cook!

    10:01

“we have a lot to show you”

    10:28

Coming later this year. Good job Rob!

    10:42

While Scott takes us through maps, here’s a question. What do you want us to try out or test in the hands-on demos after this press conference?

    10:43

Flyover is very cool looking, fun maps feature. Just at certain locations, though

    10:49

    Siri makes reservations via Opentable

    10:50

Siri also posts things to FB for you

    10:50

Scott is now wrapping up miscellaneous iOS 6 updates. Our favorite: Facetime anywhere

    10:51

That’s iOS 6. Phil is back onstage.

    10:51

iPhone 5 comes in black and white.

    10:52

Looks like we’ll find out price and availability soon. Wonder if we’ll see new ipods today also?

    10:54

Here’s a video. Reminds me of the Stride gum parody from a month or so ago. http://www.fastcocreate.com/1681450/stride-gum-takes-a-page-from-apples-marketing-handbook-in-new-spoof-campaign

    10:55

While the video plays, tell us your thoughts. Going to upgrade? what features sound best to you? Price you’d pay?

    10:57

Panorama shots looks like a fun new camera feature. Camera app stitches it together for you

    10:57

New iPhone is skinny and taller! Who wouldn’t like that

    10:58

Video is showing manufacturing process, like the show “How It’s Made”

2/3 of downloads come from iOS, so it’s getting a redesign

Think they’ll announce a Pandora killer today?

    11:09

Add songs to playlist, view it at same time as all songs

    11:09

    Drop albums into playlists. Ok…

    11:09

“Up Next” see what’s coming next to itunes player controls. Add songs to it.

    11:10

Resumes your playlist after you add a song to Up Next

    11:10

    Comment From Jeremy

Oh good, Ping is still there. Really afraid Apple would kill it. I’m the king of PING.

    11:11

Floating player means you can keep iTunes from filling the screen

    11:12

Movies: iTunes will pick up where you were watching on iPad. Avengers scene: Hulk vs Loki

    11:13

New iTunes seems streamlined, but not radically different.

    11:14

    11:14

    11:38

    Here’s Tim onstage again.

    11:39

    One more thing? An ad.

    11:39

    Dancing colorful ipods

    11:39

Ad: “how ya like me now?”

    11:40

Tim Cook recapping all new products now

    11:40

“incredible, industry leading innovation by themselves”

    11:41

    “Apple has never been stronger”

    11:41

Seems like reports of Pandora’s demise have been greatly exaggerated.

    11:41

    Music event concert time.

    11:42

Today, a performance by… Foo Fighters!

    11:42

This is the part of the show where a live band rocks the house.

    11:43

    “Times like these”

    11:44

Fun stuff. While Dave Grohl rocks out, any thoughts on today’s announcements?

    11:46

These concerts always remind me of when rich people hire a famous band for their kid’s bar or bat mitzvah. A little showy. But hey , gotta love the Foo. This is better than last year’s guest, Coldplay. Jeff from 148apps isn’t bolting for the exits.

    11:47

Should we shout out any requests? J/k

    11:47

I recall last year, Foo Fighters was cited as one of the top selling iTunes artists of all time

    11:48

Grohl is “inspired” by meeting his heroes in person. Now he’s playing There Goes My Hero

    11:49

There’s a reason these press events are hard to get into… It’s breaking news and a live show all in one.

    11:50

First row of journalists currently having their faces melted off by the Foo.

    11:51

As Foo Fighters wrap up their set– did Apple innovate enough for you today? Is a bigger screen, faster chip, and smaller frame enough to keep up with Samsung and Google?

    11:52

    One more song! “Walk”

    11:53

Let me take this moment to thank everyone who joined our liveblog and filled our cover it live to capacity.

    11:53

Next: hands on demos, and our full impressions soon.

    11:54

Foo Fighters totally rock. I highly recommend seeing them live three rows back for free.

    11:57

Encore! That was fun. Now, demos.

    11:58

That’s a wrap– we’ll have more iPhone 5 impressions for you soon. Thanks for tuning in!
