Square Enix has just announced a new mobile game based on the Hitman franchise, and it looks pretty intriguing. Instead of going the “bring the full console experience to mobile,” they’ve gone another direction entirely and developed a turn-based strategy game.
Hitman GO uses diorama-style art and has you move along pre-determined grid lines to sneak into buildings, avoid enemies, and make stealth kills. The blog post says, “all the Hitman tools of the trade you would expect are included; disguises, distractions, sniper rifles and even 47’s iconic Silverballers.”
It’ll be interesting to see who much leeway the game allows. Are the levels like puzzles, each with a single solution, or can you beat them multiple ways? How much creativity can the player bring to the table? In any case, the single screenshot they’ve released looks like a board game, which is unexpected and pretty awesome.
Hitman GO is being developed exclusively for smartphones and tablets, so the touchscreen controls ought to be good. According to the blog post, the game is “almost ready for launch.” We’ll keep you posted as we hear more.
