Hasbro To Bring 3-D To The iPhone and iPod Touch

Hasbro has announced that it will be making a peripheral for the iPhone and iPod Touch that makes it possible to view 3-D images on them. Called a My3D, the device is shaped like binoculars, but has a slot that your iDevice fits snugly into. It will sell for $30 when it comes out this spring.

Exactly what content will be available for My3D is still unclear, although Hasbro says it is currently working with Dreamworks Animation and LA Inc. to develop material. Additionally, My3D will feature content from a 3-D TV network that will launch next year from Discovery, Sony, and Imax. According to the Associated Press, the 3-D content will consist of games, virtual travel experiences, and videos.

From the looks of it, you won’t be able to touch the screen while your iPhone or iPod Touch is in a My3D, so gaming will be severely limited. Also, anyone more self conscious than a 10 year old will surely think twice about using a My3D in public.

Regardless, we’ll be keeping our eyes on My3D as its release date approaches. Hasbro is the toy company that fueled our childhood imaginations by making action figures for Transformers, G.I. Joe, Star Wars, Mr. Potato Head, and Pokemon. If they can’t do 3-D on the iPhone, then it’s quite possible that no one can.
