THUMB.RUN

The best game you aren’t playing this week - Thumb.Run

I originally heard about Thumb.Run on Product Hunt, downloaded it and ignored it for a while. But then I decided to launch it and an hour goes by and my phone battery dies. Yeah, I like this game, so I think I should write about it.

Thumb.Run is a game where the players run around a course that looks like it’s from a platformer game. Three laps against an opponent, fastest time wins. Seems simple, but it’s deceptively difficult, maddeningly addictive, and loads of fun. There are new runners to unlock and power ups available along with multiple courses. It’s $0.99 and worth a look if you like fun.

Traffic Rider

Traffic Rider - "a fully-fledged racer" - 4.5/5 from Touch Arcade

Using a motorcycle to split lanes and weave in and out of traffic, you’ll navigate linear tracks on your way to a finish line. The catch is that cars have a mind of their own, accelerating or braking in odd places. It’s tough to really get anywhere at all times, but the control scheme is so good that it will help facilitate your way through that challenge.

I was surprised by how much depth Traffic Rider has, and it’s in my regular rotation at this point. With responsive controls and a uniquely programmed set of AI cars to navigate, this one will keep you busy for a while.

Rocket Ski Racing

Rocket Ski Racing a "very solid game" - 4/5 from Touch Arcade

In Rocket Ski Racing you play as a skier with a rocket strapped to his or her back, and you must race. (I mean, if it wasn’t clear from the title.) There are six different snow covered courses that twist and curve and loop around, and you have to get to the finish line before your multicolored opponents do. Each race is usually pretty quick, with around 5 laps that whiz by in under a minute. They go by so fast, in fact, that one of the keys to success is memorizing when and where to turn, since you can’t always see very far ahead and there’s no map.

Need for Speed™ No Limits

Out Now: Need For Speed: No Limits

Made by the geniuses behind the Real Racing series, the Fire Monkeys, Need for Speed: No Limits is available now in the App Store and Google Play. It’s sort of the arcade racing answer to Real Racing 3 — but not nearly as arcadey as the Asphalt series from Gameloft.

And while there are endless things that annoy me about this game (energy timers, idiotic upgrades like fuses to tires, and the repetitive track), I have always loved NFS games and I find I’m drawn to this one too.

Warning that it employs all of the most annoying free to play tactics that EA has become known for.

Race The Sun

Out Now: Race the Sun

You are a solar craft. The sun is your death timer. Hurtle towards the sunset at breakneck speed in a futile race against time. Delay the inevitable by catching energy boosts which reverse the setting sun – if only for a moment.

Race The Sun is inspired by arcade games of the past with a focus on highscores, short game sessions, and pure fun mingled with a nerve-wracking tension. The rules are simple: don’t crash, stay in the light, and don’t slow down!
