Tetris + Candy Crush Saga = Sorus Shield - Out now on iOS

Sorus Shield is an interesting beast. It has obvious influence from Tetris — but it’s also more of a level based puzzle game like Candy Crush Saga. And it works!

In this game the pieces move from bottom to top and match in the familiar way. The difference being that pieces can move freely when parts of them are matched. This game also riffs on the Tetris model by having multiple varieties of obstacles and variations on the theme that are added as the levels increase.

All in all, Sorus Shield is a fun little game that works really well on mobile.

Skylanders SuperChargers

Skylanders Again Brings Their Whole Console Game to iOS, and this time Apple TV in Skylanders SuperChargers

Activision has once again brought their entire console game for a Skylanders franchise title to iOS and now the new Apple TV. In this edition, evil has taken over and Skylanders must fight via land, sea, and air using an nearly endless list of unique and modifiable vehicles. This edition also includes support for but does not require the Skylanders SuperChargers starter pack, a bluetooth base station that includes a controller, a couple Skylanders characters, and a vehicle. The starter pack is available via Amazon for $69. There are also dozens more additional characters and vehicles available. Additional vehicles and characters are available to purchase in the game without the base station.

On Apple TV, the initial start-up time was about six minutes (will vary greatly based on your home internet speed), which isn’t great. But additional loads were not bad as they seemed to happen in the background as cut scenes were playing. Siri remote support is there, but a controller is pretty much required as the Siri remote support is horrible.

Overall the game is impressive, and well done. It’s a great look at what console developers can do on the Apple TV and iOS. Let’s all hope we will see more like this.

The Room Three

The Craftsman Has Left a Series of Puzzles in The Room 3 from Fireproof Games

The Room was a pleasant and unexpected surprise when it was first released. As was The Room 2. This third installment builds on the past games and brings the graphics up to an unbelievable level.

In The Room 3 you are tasked with solving a series of lushly designed puzzles set by someone known as “The Craftsman.” The whole game is a mystery solved through these virtual / physical puzzles that you poke at, manipulate, and move to solve for the next clue. Set some time aside for this one, you won’t want to stop playing it.

The Room 3 is fantastic and one of the reasons that makes mobile gaming so great. Unique releases, done really well.

Slashy Hero

Slash Hero is a genre mash-up with candy, monsters, and costumes. Oh my.

Slashy Hero is a little bit maze game. A little but dungeon crawler. A little bit path drawing, hack and slash, costume collecting, and well, a whole lot more. The goal of the game is to traverse the rooms avoiding the bad guys and collecting the candy. Each room has an objective that must be completed before the exit opens. Along the way there will be big old bosses, the previously mentioned mazes and bad guys, and lots of candy to collect. While it’s a halloween themed game, it’s fun to play just about anytime.

Almost Impossible!

Though it’s 'Almost Impossible,' it’s also a lot of fun

Almost Impossible from Daniel Counsell is a kind of “nice” impossible game. The bouncing ball looks so friendly, and the red spikes look so deadly. It almost makes you forget the seventeen thousand times you’ve died in the this game.

We’ve seen many games like this before, but Almost Impossible really brings it all together and makes a winner out of the punishing platformer genre. For one, there are occasional save point — which helps a ton. Next the game is just so pleasing to look at. The goal is to move the ball to the right, past check points, over obstacles and avoiding the red bad guys. Some are stationary, some move and chase you. Almost Impossible is a quick play, painful platformer, and a winner.

Beneath The Lighthouse

"Mobile gaming done with aplomb and intelligence" - Pocket Gamer on Beneath The Lighthouse

Pocket Gamer takes a look at Nitrome’s Beneath The Lighthouse and comes away loving it’s brutal gameplay, giving it a very strong 9/10.

Why are you curled up in a corner crying and laughing? – Because Beneath the Lighthouse is a mean game. Mean and brilliant. I don’t know if there’s a word for that, but there should be.

Er, okay. So what is it? – It’s the new game from Nitrome. It’s a puzzling platformer, but in classic Nitrome fashion it’s got a brilliant twist. The main character is a ball, and you move him around by twisting the 2D levels around.

Octodad: Dadliest Catch

Loving Father, Caring Husband, Secret Octopus, and Ridiculous Game, Octodad is Out Now

So here you are, a normal everyday kinda person, just doing ordinary everyday kinda things. Trying to go about your life when people keep looking at you accusingly. It’s almost like they have never seen an octopus dressed up as a human trying to open a particularly difficult door before.

In Octodad, the goal is to go through routine and not so routine things all without a skeletal system and without drawing too much attention to yourself. Controls are pretty good considering lack of said skeleton. Though due to the small size of the screen, they can be difficult at times. All in all a very silly, and very fun game. If you liked Goat Simulator, this will be your new favorite game. For others looking for a challenge, it’s also a great little fun puzzler.
