Meganoid(2017)

Orangepixel extends Meganoid franchise with Meganoid (2017)

We’re huge Orangepixel/Pascal Bestebroer fans at Slide To Play. The retro style, maddening hardness, and constant game release from them is just amazing. Meganoid (2017) is no exception. Taking the platformer that we know and love and expanding and extending it with so many new features and reasons to pull your hair out. A great updated game from great developer.

Golf Zero

Half golf game, half platformer, Golf Zero entertains

Golf Zero is the kind of game that must have come out of a dare or a high. Combine a golf game with a platformer and throw in bullet time just for the heck of it. In the multiple holes the player has up to three shots to get the ball in the hole while jumping from platforms and generally shooting the ball (magically) while in the air. Not sure how that works, but this game, miraculously does work.

It’s inventive, fun, lots of levels, and best of all it’s free to play with ads.

The Big Journey

Big Journey from Armor Games makes me wish ngmoco didn't implode

Big Journey is just about too cute. It’s a rolling fat cat that has to eat and grow as it rolls through a beautiful platformer. Quite an homage to Rolando and the days of past. It takes the simple premise of a rolling platformer and adds a few interesting twists to it while not making it too difficult.

A real cute one and worth picking up, even if it’s just to remember how great Rolando was and complain about it being gone.

Mushroom 11

Unique puzzle adventure game perfectly suited to touch screens

I first saw Mushroom 11 running on an iPad what must have been over two years ago. It’s perfectly suited to touch screen controls and feels foreign on desktop. But the current climate means indie developers marketing strategy, as dumb as it is, is to release on PC first. Lots of reasons to do so, but inability to figure out how to market to mobile users effectively is a big part of it. With the whole marketing strategy now being bring a PC game to mobile and people will pay a bit more.

Enough about that, how about this game. It’s a really well done puzzle game where the players multitouch pushes move an amoeba like blob through a series of levels. Really well done, very unique, and fun!

Mekorama

3D robot puzzle game Mekorama is fun, charming, and unique

From Martin Magni, the developer of the great Odd Bot Out, Mekorama hit the App Store this week. This charming puzzle game has the player guide a robot through a series of very unique 3D puzzles. The puzzles have shades of Monument Valley without the Escher inspired vibe.

One of the features that really sets this game apart from others is the integrated level editor. This lets players create their own levels and share them via a simple QR code integrated image. Take a look at the new levels shared on Twitter with the #Mekorama hashtag. I’ve even created one to test the path finding skills of that little robot.

Mekorama is free in the App Store with a pay what you want price model.

THUMB.RUN

The best game you aren’t playing this week - Thumb.Run

I originally heard about Thumb.Run on Product Hunt, downloaded it and ignored it for a while. But then I decided to launch it and an hour goes by and my phone battery dies. Yeah, I like this game, so I think I should write about it.

Thumb.Run is a game where the players run around a course that looks like it’s from a platformer game. Three laps against an opponent, fastest time wins. Seems simple, but it’s deceptively difficult, maddeningly addictive, and loads of fun. There are new runners to unlock and power ups available along with multiple courses. It’s $0.99 and worth a look if you like fun.

Momoka: An Interplanetary Adventure

Momoka - Touch Arcade Game of the Week

The thing that really sets Momoka apart from those other games and gives it its own feel is when you first get the keys to your very own rocket ship. From there you can blast off and explore an entire solar system of tiny planets that, when you land on them and are exploring on foot, actually feel quite expansive. Flying through the solar system is a trip and tons of fun, and was the moment that I knew Momoka was going to be a special game. Add in the fantastic music and a quirky cast of characters to meet throughout the galaxy and you really can feel all the heart and soul that went into this game.

BADLAND 2

Badland 2 takes everything to love about Badland and turns it up to 11

Sequels can be an tough business. Similar to the way it’s hard for a band to have a hit with their second album, the second game in a franchise is usually really tough. There are so many things in play at that point — number one being the stress of the expectation others have to produce another hit. But in this case, the sequel turned out to be really amazing. Badland 2 takes everything that’s so awesome about Badland and makes it even more awesome without the game losing any of it’s super sincere originality.

The key difference in Badland 2 is the control scheme. The original was one touch — touch anywhere on the screen to flap the wings, rise up, and move forward. This version adds the ability to go left or right by touching on the left or right of the screen. This increases possibilities in the game to allow mazes that snake around rather than being a pretty much up/down affair. Other new features include different obstacles and new challenges that all fit well in the style of the game.

Badland was one of the most original and amazing games released in the history of mobile games. If you enjoyed the original’s art style and challenging gameplay, you will love Badland 2.
