Lick This! - King of Tongue out now
They say the tongue is mightier than the sword, and in King of Tongue it’s mightier than much more.
Out now on iOS, King of Tongue is a cross between a platform battler and a rope swinging game. And it’s a blast to play. Tapping on a spot on the screen, the main player’s tongue shoots out and attaches to anything it can. If it’s a stationary object then the player starts going that way. If it’s moveable then the two objects start moving toward each other. Combining these two mechanics to fight the bad guys works out really well. It may sound stupid, but sometimes stupid is just what is needed to make a game fun.

Touch Arcade Chooses Super Boys as their Game of the Week
Touch Arcade takes a look at Super Boys – The Big Fight by Mooff Games and awards it game of the week:
Super Boys is set up like a TV show fighting tournament, sort of like Smash TV, with an over-the-top announcer, a studio audience, and fabulous prizes. At first you’ll be confined to the single-player tournament which has you fighting up twenty floors of a massive tower with each floor containing four normal fights followed by a boss fight. Once you’ve beaten the first floor, you’ll be given a second character as a prize, and introduced to the mechanics of setting up and upgrading your own team of fighters.
If you’re a fan of fighting games or any of Mooff’s previous games, give Super Boys a try. It’s free after all. It does have a learning curve, but it’s worth sticking with. Especially make sure you pay attention to upgrading your characters and team stats, otherwise it can feel overly difficult. Once things click though, Super Boys is some of the most fun I’ve had on iOS in some time. Oh, and as an extra little bonus, Mooff’s entire iOS library is free right now, so it’s a good time to stock up on any of their games you might have missed.

Skylanders Again Brings Their Whole Console Game to iOS, and this time Apple TV in Skylanders SuperChargers
Activision has once again brought their entire console game for a Skylanders franchise title to iOS and now the new Apple TV. In this edition, evil has taken over and Skylanders must fight via land, sea, and air using an nearly endless list of unique and modifiable vehicles. This edition also includes support for but does not require the Skylanders SuperChargers starter pack, a bluetooth base station that includes a controller, a couple Skylanders characters, and a vehicle. The starter pack is available via Amazon for $69. There are also dozens more additional characters and vehicles available. Additional vehicles and characters are available to purchase in the game without the base station.
On Apple TV, the initial start-up time was about six minutes (will vary greatly based on your home internet speed), which isn’t great. But additional loads were not bad as they seemed to happen in the background as cut scenes were playing. Siri remote support is there, but a controller is pretty much required as the Siri remote support is horrible.
Overall the game is impressive, and well done. It’s a great look at what console developers can do on the Apple TV and iOS. Let’s all hope we will see more like this.

Flashback Game - Blue Defense: Second Wave
Every once in a while I want to take a look back at an older game that many new players may have never heard of. Let’s take a look at Blue Defense: Second Wave.
Blue Defense: Second Wave was released in September, 2010 and is the follow-up to Blue Defense, also from Cat in a Box Games. In these unique shooter games, players face wave after wave of increasingly more difficult alien ships. Both games feature a very innovative accelerometer based control scheme where the device the game is being played on must be rotated to change the angle of shooting. The game can be thought of as a rotating Space Invaders.
In another interesting, and rather morbid unique feature of this game, the players score is actually the planet being defended. The more aliens that land, the lower the population. The safer the population is kept, the more they reproduce and increase the population.
This updated version still works great on iOS 9, even though it was last updated in 2014. Give it a shot!

Track Bigfoot and other wildlife as a photographer in Bigfoot Hunter
Bigfoot Hunter from R2 Games is a new photo hunt type game where the display of the phone is a window to wilderness. Lifting and turning the phone is used to target and frame photos of wildlife, different creatures will be assigned each level. In addition, capturing a photo of the elusive Bigfoot yields bonus points.
Great art, unique controls, and a fun game combine to make Bigfoot Hunter a great little diversion.

Though it’s 'Almost Impossible,' it’s also a lot of fun
Almost Impossible from Daniel Counsell is a kind of “nice” impossible game. The bouncing ball looks so friendly, and the red spikes look so deadly. It almost makes you forget the seventeen thousand times you’ve died in the this game.
We’ve seen many games like this before, but Almost Impossible really brings it all together and makes a winner out of the punishing platformer genre. For one, there are occasional save point — which helps a ton. Next the game is just so pleasing to look at. The goal is to move the ball to the right, past check points, over obstacles and avoiding the red bad guys. Some are stationary, some move and chase you. Almost Impossible is a quick play, painful platformer, and a winner.

"Mobile gaming done with aplomb and intelligence" - Pocket Gamer on Beneath The Lighthouse
Pocket Gamer takes a look at Nitrome’s Beneath The Lighthouse and comes away loving it’s brutal gameplay, giving it a very strong 9/10.
Why are you curled up in a corner crying and laughing? – Because Beneath the Lighthouse is a mean game. Mean and brilliant. I don’t know if there’s a word for that, but there should be.
Er, okay. So what is it? – It’s the new game from Nitrome. It’s a puzzling platformer, but in classic Nitrome fashion it’s got a brilliant twist. The main character is a ball, and you move him around by twisting the 2D levels around.

Killer FPS Afterpulse Released on iOS - equal parts amazing and annoying at the same time.
Afterpulse has been in soft launch for a while now and I’ve been tracking it. It’s a really impressive first person shooter but it’s not without it’s annoyances.
First let’s get this out of the way. The first person shooter gameplay is some of the best and most impressive ever seen on a mobile platform. The graphics are beyond console quality, the controls are pretty good (for virtual sticks), and the frame rate on the latest iPhone 6s+ is amazing. Metal graphics really do impress.
But that comes at a cost. It’s a free to play game that uses all of the old, tired, annoy the hell out of the player to get them to pay tactics. They haven’t learned anything from games that have progressed the free to play methods beyond energy systems and multiple currencies. Because of this the game is unbalanced and just annoying. Really it’s a pristine, amazing FPS wrapped up in a wad of old dirty clothes.
So why are we writing about this? Well I considered not mentioning it just out of anger from the annoying energy timer. But it’s Editor’s Choice on the App Store this week and the gameplay itself is really really good. It’s so good that I am putting up with the annoyances just to play it. But I do feel a little more dirty every time I play it.
