In what we think is a very good sign for iPhone game development, the Game Developers Choice Awards recently announced their nominees and several iPhone games were included. The awards honor eleven different categories of gaming such as Best Game Design, but the most significant to us was the Best Handheld Game section.
Three out of the five nominees selected for the award are iPhone titles: Flight Control, Spider: the Secret of Bryce Manor, and Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars. The latter was likely chosen before its debut on the iPhone, but seeing as how it’s a straight port of the other versions, and the final voting will take place after its release, we’re going to go ahead and consider it an iPhone title as well as a DS and PSP game.
The GDCA is being voted on this year by an independent group of developers and industry professionals from all aspects of the industry. It’s an invitation-only group that is comprised of about 500 members, focused on providing the most objective awards ceremony in the industry.
We’ll be waiting and watching to see if an iPhone game takes the prize in the handheld category. The other two nominees are The Legend of Zelda: Spirit Tracks and Scribblenauts, which both debuted on the DS. Perhaps we’re biased, but we think that Spider and Chinatown Wars are both far more deserving than those other two, and Flight Control is probably one of the most important games to be released in years, having launched the popular “path-drawing” genre.
