Boardgames like Battleship thrive on multiplayer. Playing against the computer is fine, but competition against other humans is key. Warships – Sea on Fire! has the making of a great Battleship clone, but it lacks the ability to play against your friends.
Space parking lot full.
Instead of the classic five-ship setup, this game gives you three larger ships and a lot of smaller ones that can only take one or two hits. Each turn you fire blindly into the enemy fleet. Every time you hit a ship, you are netted another shot before your opponent can fire back. These rules, plus the game’s quick animations, keep things moving at a fast pace.
There are two single-player modes available: quick play and a 20-level campaign that becomes progressively more difficult. In the end, though, it’s the lack of multiplayer that really hurts this game. After all, what fun is it to play a board game by yourself?
Thar she blows!
Warships does include three graphical themes and a ranking system where you rise up by winning matches, but your ranking doesn’t make any difference. OpenFeint is available on the iPhone version, but is oddly missing on the more expensive iPad version.
Warships – Sea on Fire! has potential that won’t be met until we can play it against other people. We recommend sticking with the official Battleship game from EA Mobile instead.
