“What the heck is Square Enix Characters Mail?” you might ask. It’s a “decorative mail application” that allows you to send e-mails with emoticons and images from Square Enix games. So you’ll be able to sprinkle your sentences with tiny moogles and chocobos, and insert images of game-specific characters, enemies, locations, and scenes. Remember the opera house scene from Final Fantasy VI? Why not put it in an e-mail?
Square Enix has been cashing in on their games by making similar gimmick apps for a while. They’ve put out a Final Fantasy XIII Photo Gallery app, a Final Fantasy VII wallpaper app, and even an augmented reality app that lets you see Cloud Strife standing on your desk.
And we use the term “cashing in” for a reason. Even once you buy the $1.99 Characters Mail app, you don’t get all of the content they’ve released. There’s additional content available for in-app purchase.
If, like lots of people, you’re still waiting for Square Enix to release Final Fantasy Tactics, you don’t have much longer to wait. It’s supposed to hit the App Store in late June or early July.
