Plasma-Sky is a standard space shooter, but don’t let that get you down. The game gives you an overhead view of your neon spaceship, and soon neon enemies come onto the screen in waves, begging you to pelt them with your endless steam of bullets. It may play like arcade games of yore, and look similar to Geometry Wars, but we were having too much fun to care.

The enemies range in size and mobility. Some come at you in wavy lines, while others swarm the screen in repeating patterns. Others act as shields for turret-like enemies that fire red bullets at you. There’s a healthy mix of enemies and level types, so you never feel like you’re running in place.


Bullet the neon sky.

That’s a good thing, because the game isn’t long. It comes with 80 short levels, each more challenging than the last. If you’re like us, your death toll will rise the further you get. The only punishment meted out for death is losing the power-ups you’ve accumulated. The power-ups are things like multiple bullets, armor, bombs, and a variety of weapon types. They pile on fairly quickly, so even when you die they’re not gone for long.

For high score chasers, there’s a hardcore mode that does away with your health bar and extra lives, and sends you into the campaign with the goal of racking up as many points as possible before you die. Since there’s no in-app purchase, everyone is playing on equal footing, which means the online leaderboards actually mean something. This is refreshing in a day and age full of games that let you buy your way to the top of the leaderboards.

Plasma-Sky delivers a kinetic brand of blink-and-you’re-dead gameplay, but it manages to stay accessible to newbies and casual players as well. It doesn’t do anything we haven’t seen before, but it nails everything it attempts. If you buy Plasma-Sky, you’re not likely to regret it.
