Monty Python’s Trivial Quizzical Quest Review

If you don’t know the difference between Terry Jones and Terry Gilliam, this is not the trivia game for you. Monty Python’s Trivial Quizzical Quest is like Scene It for hardcore fans of the decades-old British comedy group, and if you don’t want to be completely lost, you’ll have to at least know who’s who.

If you haven’t yet been introduced to Monty Python, they’re a group of hilarious performers who starred in one British TV show and a handful of movies. The most well-known of their films is Monty Python and the Quest for the Holy Grail, and this app is filled with clips from that movie. Unfortunately, we didn’t come across any clips from Life of Brian or Meaning of Life, their two other beloved films.

It’s just a flesh wound!

Between the clips from the TV show Monty Python’s Flying Circus and the Holy Grail film, there’s a lot of fun to be had just watching classic scenes on your device. Like in Scene It, the clips set up trivia questions, which range wildly in difficulty. Each game is 15 questions long, and you can play pass-and-play multiplayer with a friend, or go solo.

There are also questions that use audio clips, but they’re not nearly as fun, since you’re listening to a comedy routine that was originally designed for television. There are also behind-the-scenes photos, and clever songs like “Always Look On The Bright Side of Life” will play as you answer questions.

Not every bit they did was memorable.

While it’s a fairly complete trivia app for hardcore Monty Python fans, there’s absolutely nothing to introduce potential new fans to the group’s weird sensibilities. We’d have loved to see complete videos of sketches, selectable songs, or a gallery of behind-the-scenes pictures to teach Python history to anyone who’s not a superfan going in.

The lack of special features kept us from really enjoying this Python trivia app. There’s only one pack of questions right now, and you’ll probably see the questions repeat fairly often. At the end, you’re given a ranking that relates to a particular Python sketch, but there’s nothing else to do with your score besides post it on leaderboards or challenge a friend on OpenFeint.

Monty Python’s Trivial Quizzical Quest doesn’t feel like much of a quest at all. It’s a fine, fun distraction for hardcore fans of the show, especially with the variety of video clips. But it’s not very welcoming for potential new fans, and it’s light on the extras once you’ve exhausted the questions. Don’t bother buying it unless you can quote every line from the movies and show.
