Godzilla – Smash3 Review

In the new Godzilla movie, Godzilla is a savior of humanity more than an unstoppable monster. Godzilla – Smash3 is a movie tie-in game that uses tile-matching puzzle mechanics to activate the creature’s deadly attacks, and in a change from the movie, these attacks are mostly directed at tanks and planes and rarely towards other giant monsters.

If you’re looking for an action-based game where you directly control the massive destruction, you’d probably prefer games like Destructopus or Colossatron. Gameplay-wise, Godzilla – Smash3 is all about matching tiles, while the action unfolds above a central grid.

Even though this takes some of the fun out of smashing up a city, the violence above is still pretty spectacular. Godzilla growls, spews radiation, and swings his tail as the military fires back with missiles and machine guns. The locations are nicely rendered, although you will have to tromp through the same few city blocks repeatedly.

Instead of requiring you to swap tiles, Godzilla Smash-3 uses a tracing mechanic similar to Puzzle Craft. Since you can trace diagonally through the tiles, it’s relatively easy to make matches. After a few moves, the military will fire back at you and reduce your health bar. In addition to attacks, you can restore your health or build up a special move with different tiles.

What adds to the challenge later on are limitations on the number of moves you can make, junk blocks that fill up the screen, or an overall time limit. For a bit of added complexity, longer chains will create explosions on the board that take out additional rows or columns.

Since Godzilla – Smash3 is a free download, you can choose to pay a dollar for single-use items, or to restore your lives instead of waiting for them to replenish over time. The game offers a lot of content for a free download, and its main goal seems to be to get you to the movie theater to buy a ticket, so we don’t really see the necessity of paying extra to advance through the levels.

You’ve almost certainly played a match-3 game like Godzilla – Smash3 before, so we think the developers missed an opportunity to create an epic intense monster-battling game. Still, it’s a reasonably well-done freemium puzzler, with lots of levels and gameplay variety, plus sharp background graphics. It’s not the king of the App Store the way Godzilla is king of the monsters, but it’s better than a regular-sized lizard in a terrarium.
